I am currently reading “Four Blood Moons,” by Pastor John Hagee. He claims that we can look to the sun, moon, and stars for signs and messages from God? Is this in line with Catholic teaching?

.
Forget trying to discern signs of the end times. Jesus said that no one knows the time but the Father. So, in other words, it’s NONE OF OUR BUSINESS.

Our job is to be holy. To do this, we must live right, trust God, pray, and be faithful. Above all, we must love and serve God by loving and serving the people God puts in our path. The rest will take care of itself.

We’re not steering the ship. We can only do God’s will for us and trust God to deliver us safely to the journey’s end.

To the original poster…

you should check out the “End Times Speculation” thread. There’s a lot of great information and discussion there…it’s in the “Back Fence” section.

Forget this stuff.

When God puts a sign in the sky we will all know it is something unique from him and not just an eclipse.

Start to worry when a man claims to be the Messiah and seduces the world.

Thanks for asking what Catholic teaching says on such matters.

(The relevant section in the CCC is bolded)
2115 God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility.
2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to “unveil” the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

John Hagee is not Catholic. He is pastor of the Cornerstone non-denominational mega-church in Texas. Forget it.

The sun and the moon darkened are from the Book of the Prophet Joel chapters 2 and 3. He is talking about swarms of locusts which represent the five great kingdoms of the Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks and Romans.

I know I’m not quite ready for the end times, so I hope they aren’t coming yet :D. Either way, I’d be more focused on attaining holiness both for yourself and others. That way when the end comes whether it’s your own life or of the world, you’ll be ready and have no worries.
