I tried to make a similar point over in this thread. Children raised in the prevailing social ideology of today are taught to fetishize and exult their impulses, no matter how base and disordered; they’ve been inculcated with no respect for the authority of church, state, family, community, duty, or morality; and they’re taught, of course, that society is secretly run by a shadowy cabal of bigots and fascists. And then we’re surprised when they turn out gross, disrespectful, and violent!

As bad as things were in England for a few days, it would be far worse should something like this happen in the states with all the guns and crazy rural people. I would much rather be in a British riot than an American one, and I’ve lived in Britain.

Ha, my thoughts were “at least if something like that happens over here I’ll have a gun.” But then again, I’m a crazy rural person.

When I first heard of the riots in Britian at first I thought that the British have lost their stiff upper lip. Then I thought their young people lost their respect for law that their parents were noted for. They have completely lost their moral compass.

The sikhs and muslims seem to more of a moral compass in a strange land. From the English newspapers I have picked up a thread that these rioters are the end result of a tolerant government that looked after their needs to the point where they have a sense of entitlement that is also taking hold here in the US.

The British police seemed to so concerned for rights and dignitiy of the rioters at the expense of the lawabiding citizenry. Mr. Cameron finally had to step to the plate and issue orders to the police that this type of action is not to be tolerated. Why did he have to make such a statement in a country of laws. I think that was because no amount of tolerance was going to stop those people from damaging property and later killing bystanders.

I’m afraid that tolerance seems to breed resentment of authority and societal restraint. There are some people who just can’t be reasoned without the use or the threat of force.

From you use of the term “crazy rural people” it shows in you a similar and singular lack of respect and tolerance for people as was exhibited in the streets of Britian . I have found more understanding in rural people than you seem to have either found or practice in an urban setting. While I may be not be comfortable of urban settings I would never stoop to insult a class of urban settlers like you have done here.

You were probably not around during our riots of the 60’s but the street of rural America were far safer than some of the streets of Chicago or Los Angeles.

Just realized that this may sound somewhat confrontational. My apologies if so, I’d probably have put one of those smiley face things to show I was completely kidding around, except I’m allergic.

So am I. I lived in England for 4 years, and I much prefer to live where I can own the equipment to defend myself. I also prefer rural living to urban; the nice thing about living in the sticks is that it’s very hard to organize a riot when the population density is low.

If you need someone to winch your car off the road after it’s run into a ditch, you will wish one of them crazy rural people were around.

I’ve lived in some of the most metropolitan cities on the planet and in some of the most rural areas, and country folk (all around the planet) are generally among the most charitable people I’ve met, and will go out of their way to help a stranger. A higher rate of Christian belief probably contributes to that.

Also, in this country at least, among the best armed, There may be something to Heinlein’s dictum that an armed society is a polite society.
