Lord, just let me be who You made me to be!

I would not usually post an entire meditation from outside but because of the way the links to this site work, I believe that it just links to the meditation for the day and that it would not go to what I’m referencing after today. This comes from the Word Among Us for November 3.

My heart is not proud; nor are my eyes haughty. It’s true, Lord, that sometimes I am arrogant. Self-importance, contempt, even disdain for others do leak out of me now and then. But my hope is in you. I want to be the person you always intended me to be—even before I was born.

**That person is awesome, Father, because your image shines through so thoroughly. Free me to become that person. Free me from the pride that thinks it isn’t good enough, and forgive me for trying to be anyone other than what you intend. Remind me of the gifts you’ve given me, and show me how to begin to use them in a way that pleases you. **

I do not busy myself with … things too sublime for me. Father, I want to leave the high and marvelous things to you. I will content myself with peace instead. Lead me in your peace, free from the discontent of striving and the torment of thinking that I must know more, understand more, seek more, and do more just to please you. I will be happy to receive what you offer me in prayer, in Scripture, and in your church. It’s enough to know the gift of your peace, to smile at the good that you are.

I have stilled my soul. Who I am is good enough! Father, I trust your Holy Spirit to show me what needs to change and what doesn’t. For the rest, I want to be content with who I am, how you have made me, and where you have put me. I want only to sit in your embrace—secure, safe, trusting in your protection. It is enough to be at ease in your presence, like a child nestled on its mother’s lap, resting in the assurance of your unfailing, perfect love.

God, I know that you will tell me what you think about me. I know that you will tell me how much you love me. I trust you. I believe that you will speak to my heart—and so I will be quiet right now and listen for your voice. Stir up in me the desires you placed in me from the beginning. Stir up in me, too, a greater desire to become the person you created me to be.

“Free me from the pride that thinks it isn’t good enough, and forgive me for trying to be anyone other than what you intend.”

How often I just look at who I am and feel like a failure compared to those I see around me. How often I feel like I could accomplish something for God if I just had someone else’s gifts.

One of my favorite posters here has reminded me on more than one occasion that I am exactly who God made me to be. That if I became another Francis of Assisi He wouldn’t have His beloved John. And I blush every time I hear that as it is so hard to accept that my measly efforts amount to anything. But the truth is that if I use the gifts I’ve been given the way God intends for me to use them, I will accomplish what He sent me to accomplish. What else could I, or should I, ask?

Somehow I just have to keep on working to trust that “who I am is good enough!”

Peace,

Wow, that is really powerful. Thanks for posting it.

We just have to be who we were made to be.

Thanks for that, John. It reminds me of this, which has given me much comfort in the past:
PSALM 131
Childlike trust in God
131:1 Yahweh, my heart has no lofty ambitions, my eyes do not look too high. I am not concerned with great affairs or marvels beyond my scope.
131:2 Enough for me to keep my soul tranquil and quiet like a child in its mother’s arms, as content as a child that has been weaned.
131:3 Israel, rely on Yahweh, now and for always!
To trust that God loves us as we are is hard at times.

Not to be a downer, but you really shouldn’t post something you didn’t write in its entirety unless the site it is from gives permission, you know? It’s not really fair for them, as they do sell this stuff and if a free online version is only available for a limited time, that is probably by design. I do not remember how theirs works. If you did get permission or it’s indicated on their website, I’m sorry to bring it up, but we need to really support the folks who bring us this great stuff 👍

I do not want to sidetrack this thread any further, but as I am unable to edit my last post (quoted above) at this late date, I just want to say that I am very sorry for posting something so off the real topic here. I know the OP was very thoughtful to think of us and share this with us, and I realize now I was making a lot of assumptions posting what I did, I do not know the exact situation really and I know from his posts that he is a very faithful Catholic. I did not mean to imply otherwise, though I see now thinking on the matter that my rather abrasive tone may have made it sound that way. I hope this will be the end of my foot in mouth disease, but I am not yet who the Lord made me to be! :o

Thank you very much for sharing, John!👍

Word Among Us I think, well at least for me, is the most valuable contemporary spiritual regular publication available. And it is so very cheap to subscribe. In fact, I think it was you on another site that first introduced me to the wonderful publication that it is.

Thanks again:thumbsup: …and good to catch up with you again in these Forums, my friend…Barb:)

Thank you for your comments Pray4life and I am actually going to verify with the publisher what their stance is on quoting them. No offense taken whatsoever. 🙂

Peace,

I agree with you Barb about Word Among Us. I do occasionally glance at other such publications but have not found any others that take me to the level of reflection that this one does.

It’s nice to actually be starting to feel a little reflective again after such a dry spell. I think my just completed pilgrimage in Assisi did wonders in bringing my soul to rest, even if it didn’t have specific “aha!” moments to it.

And by the way, though you probably didn’t recognize yourself there, it was you I was referring to who was the first who reminded me that I needed to just be me. Reen and Lana have also done continual duty in reminding me when I start to bemoan my seemingly paltry efforts.

I just need to keep focused and try to live as that beautiful quote of Nick9’s notes, not being concerned with things beyond my scope. God made each one of us as such amazing messengers of His love, if we’ll just use the gifts He gave us. It just seems so much easier to find that in others than in ourselves for some reason.

Peace to you Barb!

Hi John…Reading the above it struck me and is apparent I think how we have each given something to the other as we travelled on our way - and pretty much as it is ‘supposed’ to be I think : we are gifts to each other. Along the way for sure, you and Reen have been real gifts to me and I have learnt, changed and grown - and still do so as I come across something either of you have written here and there. I dont think I know Lana.

I am glad that Assisi gave you something if a rather intangible something perhaps as I was very confident that it would (give you something I mean).

Blessings and my warm regards, John…Barb:)
