Well after skimming a few of these posts I will simply go on enjoying the book for the story etc… 🙂 Pure simple pleasure…

I agree, I heard this too. Many people tried to tie it to WWII and he rejected this.

I am sure he was influenced greatly by his faith, as all good Catholics are. The start of the Sillmarillion in particular perhaps (even though it doesn’t follow genesis at all). But he had many other influences. Beorn is very obviously based off of epic nordic poetry.

I think one can find what one wants to find if one looks hard enough. Of course, there is no harm in that, it’s just not necessarily what Tolkein intented.
 
I wrote a blog post on the Trinity in The Lord of the Rings. Though Eru Ilúvatar is the Godhead of the Tolkien mythos, I explored how Aragorn (the titular Return of the King), Gandalf (the Resurrected), and Frodo (what good can come from Hobbiton?) are all sacrificial Messianic characters to a certain extent.
