Hello,

I have been trying to understand the differences in all the editions of the little office. I have the contemporary Catholic Book Pub. and the Baronius Editions. I also see that there is an edition from Loreto Publications and St. Bonaventure Press. Does anyone know what the differences in these editions are? Maybe if you have them you can take some pictures?

Thank you.

The CBP (Rotelle) is cobbled together from the Liturgy of the Hours. It requires the least amount of time to recite. It’s also the least traditional: amazon.com/Little-Office-Blessed-Virgin-English/dp/1905574401/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1468448205&sr=1-3&keywords=little+office+of+the+blessed+virgin+mary

The Baronius is good, but some of the Latin translation does not flow well. The book is beautiful, but pricey in the $30-40 range: amazon.com/Little-Office-Blessed-Virgin-English/dp/1905574401/ref=sr_1_3?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1468448205&sr=1-3&keywords=little+office+of+the+blessed+virgin+mary

The Angelus Press is also good, again I don’t care for the translation: amazon.com/Little-Office-Blessed-Virgin-Mary/dp/193784319X/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1468448205&sr=1-4&keywords=little+office+of+the+blessed+virgin+mary

I have not seen a copy of the St. Bonaventure or Loreto, so cannot express an opinion on them. The version I use is the 1946 version, edited by Rev. J. M. Lelen, Ph.D. – I prefer the way the language flows in this one.

I have the St. Bonaventure Press edition. First I must state that it uses the 1904 translations. I also have the FSSP edition (which I believe is done by Baronius Press).
I have given away my contemporary versions of the Little Office. My preference is the St. Bonaventure edition. The language is very close to the Douay -Rheims Bible. It flows very smoothly for me.

I even bought a copy for my wife. We tried to say the hours together during Lent this year. It work pretty good after she got used to the English. The Latin side was too difficult for her this year. Perhaps next year.

🙂

Is it the exact same structure as Baronius, just with a better English translation that is closer to Douai-Rheims?

I only have the Baronius Press edition of the Little Office, but I like it very much. It is wonderfully made and has commendation from the FSSP. The English is traditional and the Scriptures are taken from the Douay-Rheims Bible. It has a section that explains the history of the Little Office and what the rubrics are, along with having the rubrics in red alongside the actual prayers themselves.

I don’t know the difference between the editions as they seem to be all from different years, but I do know that the Baronius one is updated to comply with the 1961 Breviary which is what Pope Benedict permitted to be said in his motu proprio.

I’m not good at taking pictures, especially while finding out how to hold a book open at the same time, and I took them with my dinosaur phone so they’re a bit blurry, but here they are. I have never posted pictures before so I hope you can actually see them.
