Losing a Sacramental

Well, I know that to retire a Sacramental that has been blessed, one must bury it or burn it. What if I were to lose one. I have a scapular, and I wear it constantly. I’m going with friends to a lake for a few day and would like to wear it. However, is there a problem with it getting pulled off in the lake? Just thought I’d ask.

I wouldn’t sweat it. It’s not like your intentionally trying to lose it.

But, if you’re really worried, just take it off before you get in the lake. I know, it would be most unfortunate if you’d happen to drown without wearing your scapular. But those are the chances you take. It’s a risk vs. reward equation. 👋
 
Just wear it, if you want to, pin it to an article of clothing, like a T-Shirt or something. If you have time, you could also get a scapular metal to pin to your clothing during your vacation.
But taking it off? I don’t ever take mine off except to shower. Probably because of the promise that comes with the scapular.

The sabbatine privilege is a special promise extended to all that wear the scapular and are enrolled in the scapular. The privilege was approved by Pope John XXII, and was later confirmed by Pope Gregory XIII, Pope Clement VII, and Pope St. Pius V. The privilege states that those souls who keep the necessary requirements of the privilege will be released from purgatory by Our Lady the Saturday after they die. The requirements are: 1.The scapular must be worn and the wearer must be enrolled in the scapular. 2. Chastity to one’s state in life must be observed. 3. One must fast from meat on Wednesdays and Saturdays. 4. You must recite the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin or the rosary everyday.

Wear a scapular metal while in the lake or dressed in swimwear. Return to the regular scapular when not near the water. You may obtain a scapular metal and wear it since you are already enrolled without needing to have it blessed.

Confraternity of the Brown Scapular (I’m 99.9% sure that’s Rich means). I’ve got a nifty little thing on how to be inducted. I’ll show you later.

As for getting a scapular medal, I was under the impression that we aren’t supposed to substitute even that for a brown scapular. It didn’t even come up this weekend because we couldn’t get any of the jetskis to start, so we just drove quads, go-karts, and went off-roading in a 1978 Cadillac Fleetwood that we all went in on (it was really cheap). Funny thing happened last night, one of the little papers fell off my scapular, so I’m going to get a new one tomorrow (the local Catholic bookstore is closed on Mondays). But, I’m going to keep this one as my scapular for the purpose of wearing at the beach or in other large bodies of water (though I will get a scapular medal eventually and just attach it to my watch when I go in the water). Thanks for the responses.

There are different opinions on this, one should always try to wear the woolen (cloth) scapular and in my opinion, the more it itches the better it is. However the medal is allowed in situations where cloth would become filthy, or in cases where the scapular might be damaged or suffer from rapid deterioration. Therefore in your case where you would have been in the lake or river, a medal would be appropriate.

I’m gonna end up just wearing the medal as a backup in case my cloth scapular comes off. I have no problems with wearing it at the beach or something.

I wear my scapular in the shower. That keeps it clean. When I get out and am dry, I put on a second one, and then take the first one off to air dry.
 
I received a five-fold Scapular at my Confirmation.

However, Father didn’t do the Investiture but just doused it with Holy Water and gave it to me to wear.

Ummm, is this okay or should I “get a second opinion” and talk to another priest?
