Losing faith....help

hi, my name is maria, i need help finding my faith again…i was raised catholic, but its been a while since ive been to mass because my family doesnt go to mass…since like a year ago i started questioning my faith… i started considering myself a “person of science”…but i dont want to anymore, i want to be close to god again… i just got my driver’s license, so im planing on going to mass tomorrow…any advice on what else i should do to regain my faith…it will be greatly apprecated
 
Dear Maria,

Congratulations on getting your DL. And welcome back to the holy Sacraments.

You could consider the plea of the man in the Gospel who asked Jesus to heal his son: “Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief.”

Faith is a gift–but it must be exercised and fed.

Remember, your desire to come back to faith has come through the direct inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

Hi Maria and welcome back. Congratulations on your DL (and please drive carefully - sorry, my daughter is practicing for her license and I’m a worrying dad).

Jesus, Mary and the angels are going to be so happy to see you at Mass on Sunday! Go knowing that you are loved and missed. Salvation is a process, so take it one step at a time.

One concrete thing that I think will help is to go to reconciliation. I know if may sound a little intimidating or frightening after being away for a while, but God is waiting for you to come to him in the sacrament.

P.S. - I am a scientist also, and there is nothing within science that is incompatible with the faith.
 
Hello. If your parish has Adoration I would suggest you go, the quiet and peaceful time spent with Jesus will be of such benefit. Also you may want to read some books on the lives of the Saints. Pray the Rosay and/or the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and ask God for the grace to believe. God is waiting for you with open arms for you are His Beloved Child. God Bless you.
 
Maria, While you are at Mass tomorrow, pick up a bulletin and see what youth groups they have…or see if there is a parish near you that has LifeTeen Mass…worshiping with your peers will feed your soul and give you a safe place to ask questions, explore faith and to remember the Celebration of your Life! Our parish has 3 groups going all the time…a movie night, a game night, outdoor youth activiites, all different things offered for diverse interests - also, if you want a surge of faith…find out about World Youth Day - I took a youth group to WYD 2000 in Rome and it changed all of our lives, I am no longer a youth minister, but I keep in touch with many of the youth I traveled with to this day …

I am in RCIA, and I am kind of in the same boat as you. I haven’t lost faith as you have, but have been away for a while for a lot of reasons (excuses). I am planning on going in tomorrow morning, and kneeling before my Jesus, and asking him for forgiveness, and thanking him for His patience. I’d tell him exactly what you have told us, and wait…

See, our Deacon told us that wherever two or more people gather to worship him, He is there. He is in Church, walking up and down the pews, putting his hand on the heads of those who pray before Mass. He hears us.

Just try it, and see what He wants you to do.

Welcome back. I dont think you are losing faith, you just strayed a little. Some sheep scatter in the pasture, but Jesus is our shepherd and finds us again. Perhaps you were away for a reason, as in you needed to see what life was like without faith and you missed the inner peace and fulfillment faith brings and decided to come back. Even when we feel all alone, we are never alone. Jesus was next to you all this time and will be so happy when you go to church tomorrow and hopefully for the rest of your life.

Do you have any family members that still do go to church that you could go with? Favorite aunts, grandmothers, relatives? Sometimes the buddy system helps.

I’m currently in RCIA preparing to be accepted into the church this Easter and I just wanted to be among those welcoming you back to mass (a big step!)

As a soon-to-be physician I place a lot of stock in science and for at least 15 yrs lived as an atheist due to what I considered to be an inability to reconcile faith and science. Upon further investigation, however, I found that there was really nothing in science that disproves the existence of God, especially within Catholic understanding which allows for the existence of evolution.

On the contrary, I found that one of the beauties of the Catholic faith is the insistence that we all use our reason along with the help of the Holy Spirit to find Jesus in the world around us. Once you embrace this concept the world opens up to those of us interested in science as not just a place of natural beauty but as a carefully engineered universe pointing to God in all his glory.

I hope that attending mass this weekend will help renew your sense of God’s love in your soul and that the witness of your friends and fellow pilgrims-in-faith here provide you with the support you need to develop your faith. My prayers go out to you and your family. 🙂
 
I suggest Sacramental Confession as soon as possible…then receive Our Lord in The Most Blessed Sacrament…spend a Holy Hour in Eucharistic Adoration…Read the Lives of the Saints…Story of a Soul, etc…I found all I ever needed in those few things to strengthen my relationship with God…Good Luck…I am praying for you.

I 4th (or 5th) the advice to seek reconciliation through the Sacrament of Confession. Then most imporantantly follow this up with reception of the Holy Eucharist.

Communion (at daily Mass if you can manage it) will strengthen your faith more than you can imagine right now. This infusion of grace will no doubt be imperceptible for a long while, but I can almost guarantee that there will come a moment when you suddenly realize that you have faith and it is strong.

And, the rosary . . . no matter how dry it feels . . . say it while concentrating on what each words means. That’s my advice, which is pretty much an echo of what everyone else has already said.

I am a recently returned Catholic. I’ve been back with the Church about a year and 8 months. On the advice of a Franciscan sister, I went to Mass to see how I would feel. One thing led to another and I went to Confession for the first time in decades. Then I received Communion frequently****
Receive Our Lord in the Eucharist as much as you can. The rest will follow. 👍
 
Hi (((maria)))…I think it sounds like you’ve always had faith-but now you want to explore it and embrace it and commune with it…ultimately that’s what Faith is all about honey-finding your way home…and while you may have felt you turned away from God- He never turned away from you-like Motel6…he 'left a light on for ya…" ;-)…getting your license(congratulations)…and your heart hearing the Holy Spirit prompting you to go to mass-may just be what your family needs to see also to follow your example…one step at a time honey-you are not alone-Jesus will be walking right beside you…feel the love-welcome home …👍 God Bless
 
You might need more information to help foster your faith. I recommend Pillar of Fire, Pillar of Truth:

On the spiritual level, I think you need to hear God. God speaks in many ways. I think the Bible is the most direct way. Open up your Gospels, and see what God says to you. When something catches your attention, focus on that. Ponder it and apply it in your life. That’s one way God reaches out. When you know he’s at work in your life, that’s how you build faith.

I so glad you heard God calling you back, that is so wonderful.

I would receive the the sacrament of Penance and then the Eucharist as soon as possible. Praying and reading the Bible will help you open your heart to God’s word.

Never underestimate our Mother either…You want to find Christ again…seek out his Mother…she will lead you back to Him.
 
One idea I always go over besides useing the bible to get me thinking im in the right faith is that I believe people like Some of the Saints have seen Jesus and or marry before. once the yhave seen them most likely they would have said which church to go to. and they said stay in the Catholic church. just my thought.

Congratulations on being one of those lost sheep mentioned in the Bible story: If a man has 100 sheep and loses one, does he not leave the 99 in search of the one that is lost? And does he not rejoice more over the finding of the one than over the 99 that were not lost?

Please say a prayer for all of us. I’m sure your “lost-but-now-found” status may give you a pipeline to God!
