Lost My Tempor Somewhat Today

Earlier today, I was on my local university’s “free speech zone” and a friend of mine who is one of these street preachers and who knows that I am possibly going to become Roman Catholic started lambasting the Roman Catholic Church.

I argued against him, but I eventually lost my tempor when he kept calling the Roman Catholic Church the “whore of Babylon” and eventually said something along the lines of, “I’d like to punch you right now.”

I later apologized for my words and he forgave me and I knew I should not have lost my cool like that, but does anyone else ever run into those kinds of situations?

Yes, I do too. It can be over any heartfelt topic. Frustration turns to anger and that turns to rage. It is sinful; it is a lack of my trust in Jesus that in all things He is victorius. In a way it tells me I still have work to do to make Him my foundation. Each slip is also yet another call in the continual call to conversion.

Go to confession, repent, and pray more. That’s my plan.

guys like that are attention hounds and they’re all over the place. its a no-win argument. they live for the reaction you gave him; that’s the main reason he’s there, to get attention and to get under your skin. you were in a free speech zone at college, so you can’t very well drop him with sucker punch. your best bet is to ignore him and walk away, remind him about the Inquisition, or divert him with a demand to know the truth about the government coverup of flying saucers. its a psychological war out there, don’t play by his rules.

I confess I should not have lost my tempor and I later went to Confession about it (although I am not Roman Catholic…yet , the Priest at the local RC Church/Student Center allows me to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation), but what really got me going was:

1. He continued calling the Roman Catholic Church the “whore of Babylon”, a bunch of pedophiles (even after I explained that the statistics show that Protestant “denominations” had similar problems) and actually started attacking Saints (i.e. St. Francis, etc.) and saying they were in Hell, saying Roman Catholics are not really Christian and just being obnoxious and insulting.
2. He refuses/puts off reading actual Roman Catholic apologists, preferring to instead read various Anti-Catholic ones (since we both come from a Jewish background, I compared it to trying to understand Judaism by reading Nazi propaganda, but he still refused to budge)
3. He keeps proclaiming Sola Scriptura, but when I challenged him to find a verse that actually supports it (and I showed him that Timothy only shows that all Scripture is profitable, etc., not that Scripture is the only profitable, etc. writings), he keeps putting it off

People who deliberately blind themselves, stick their fingers in their ears when someone tries to reason with them, are not people who are going to rouse up nice feelings in anyone. If you have a temper, and even if not, I think the best thing at this point is to ignore the person. Just my take. The person sounds attention starved and not acting in honest faith. So I’d pray and do some kind of penance for the person. For yourself, practice humility, pray for it, learn about it…this will help angry tendencies when you become a humble yet strong beacon of light for the Church.

Have to say, I think I’m alot like Mother when it comes to having a temper.
