Lost the arguement

While chatting with a couple of friends recently, not catholics, but deeply commited in the Christian faith… Anyway…the subject turned to religion, the bible,and such like… As soon as they said that evolution has never been proved, but they know creation to be a fact as it was written in THE GOOD BOOK, I just decided to give up… Why do some people insist on that arguement???

Though if a ship came and they had binoculars, they would see the top of the ship first, which would teach them that the surface of the earth is curved.

Sometimes the evidence is there but people refuse to accept it, even when it’s in plain sight. It’s hard to admit one’s shortcomings.

As a student to facts, they need an education.

This is not the case with creationism, but we have sufficient reason to believe it to be the case. If it were so clear cut, then we would not need our most valued principle, ‘faith.’ Is it completely refutable? Absolutely not. Nor is it the case for evolution, but we have sufficient evidence to believe it to be true. Why are your friends against evolution? There is no contradiction between evolution and creationism, as we were discussing in another thread it fulfills a teleological connection. But once you start using Darwinian concepts of undirected, spontaneous, godless evolution then there’s problems. Guessing they’re young earth creationists?

Note that the Bible does not say that God created everything directly. For example

11 And God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth.” And it was so. 12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:11-12 can be regarded as a guided evolution.

Creating a mechanism to produce results in sequence seems a much more elegant way than simply doing everything directly.

I recall seeing a clip from someplace of a Rube Goldberg contraption that some one built. The ringing of the alarm clock activates various mechanisms to close the window, turn up the heat, start the coffee, etc. It demonstrates a higher level of skill than a vast array of timers to do each task individually.

i think the original poster in this thread “lost the argument” because so many christians, protestants and catholics alike, still cling to a literal interpretation of the old testament. many biblical scholars, since evolution and other scientific facts have cropped up, have long known that the torah contained myths, but the average christian (or jew for that matter) has not been educated enough in the science involved to understand that the literal and fundamentalist interpretation of the old testament simply do not jibe with what academia teaches today.

Actually, Genesis is not that wrong. The first thing is that the “days” actually mean epochs of time which in some cases could be days. So, these could be over long, long periods of time. Second is that the Hebrew word for create out of nothing is only used 3 times in Genesis. The word for formed is used for the creation of man. If we interpret this forming to mean that it could have happened over many years that the species were formed into what eventually would become homo sapien then our judgements based on Genesis are perfectly founded and in no way wrong. So,really you both are right in a sense and your friends are only reading half the story
