LOTH and Angelus

Please excuse my ignorance, but the Liturgy of the Hours and the Angelus are different, correct? Is the Angelus part of the LOTH? From my Google searches, they appear to be different.

Also, there was a lot in the news today of the pope praying the last Angelus. When he is looking out of the window upon the crowds, I assume he just does that for the noon Angelus?

Correct. The LOTH and Angelus are two different things. The only thing that makes them similar is that they can be prayed several times a day. The LOTH is divided into seven hours that can be prayed throughout the day. The Angelus is typically prayed in the morning, noon, and evening. And yes, on Sundays at the noon Angelus, the Pope prays and delivers a short address.

The Liturgy of the Hours is the public prayer of the Church, a series of Psalms and Biblical Canticles, as well as readings and intercessory prayers, which are prayed at different times throughout the day. All clerics and religious are bound to pray some form of it. The Angelus is a Marian prayer, as others have said, traditionally prayed three times a day–6 AM, Noon, and 6 PM. It goes like this:

V: The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
R: And she conceived by the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary…

V: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.
R: Be it done unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary…

V: And the Word became Flesh.
R: And dwelt among us. Hail Mary…

V: Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God
R: That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy grace into our hearts, that we to whom the Incarnation of Christ thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His Resurrection, through the same Christ Our Lord, Amen.

I have heard before that religious are required to pray the LOTH. How about the Angelus? Is that an optional devotion or do you know of any religious orders that pray it on a regular basis? I assume the pope fits in that category since he prays it every Sunday at noon in the window (and I assume at the other times in private).

Monastics pray the Angelus regularly. At the Benedictine monastery I’m affiliated with, although separate prayers the LOTH and Angelus are closely linked. They pray it after vigils (approx. 6 am), after Sext (about 12:15 PM) and after Compline (8 pm). They do it immediately after each of those Offices while standing in their choir stalls.
