Hi,

I have wondered this for a while…

IF the first thing I do in the morning is attend daily Mass….should I still pray Morning Prayer?

If I attend evening Mass (not a Vigil) do I still pray Evening Prayer?

I assume the answers are yes and yes but also IF I attend a Vigil Mass do I still pray Evening Prayer? How about Compline? I recall being told I do NOT pray Compline if I attend Christmas or Easter Vigils.

I have recently been attending 7am Mass and not able to get up early enough to pray Morning Prayer before. I like to get there early for Rosary so am at the church by 6:20. it feels odd to come home and pray Morning Prayer after starting my day with the Eucharist.

Thanks,

EP

Yes you can still pray Morning Prayer if you attend an early Mass. You can do the same with Evening Prayer if you attend an evening Mass; normally EP can be said anytime after 4 pm. The LOTH and Mass complement each other, they don’t mutually exclude each other. However if it comes down to a choice because you only have time for one or the other, well Mass is the summit of our liturgy.

As you note there are some times in the liturgy where one omits Compline.

The Christmas and Easter vigils are two examples, but also the Vigil of Pentecost. Similarly, you’d omit Evening Prayer on Holy Thursday and Good Friday if you attend those liturgies.

When I used to attend 7 am Mass when I was working in a place where that was possible, I’d pray the Office of Readings before Mass, and Morning Prayer afterwards.

Is the Rosary a communal recitation of the Rosary or a private one? If it’s private, you could pray Morning Prayer before Mass and the Rosary afterwards. But if communal, I can understand the difficulty of getting earlier to say Morning Prayer!
