The LOTH Antiphon for Good Friday ( 4 volume set pg 485) says “It was just about nine in the morning when they nailed Jesus to the cross.” The Divine Mercy Chaplet for Saturday says… “His three-hour agony on the Cross”. Is it 9-3 or noon till 3?

Peace

The Gospel of John says he was crucified around noon, I believe, and died at 3pm. In Mark he was crucified around 9, darkness covered the earth at noon, and he died at 3pm. I have also wondered how this is interpreted but never taken the time to look it up. I have heard that it has to do with the different ways in which the ancient peoples told time, and then the way the time-telling discrepancies get translated into English and other modern languages. As a Classicist I’m ashamed to not know more about this.

Do not let your peace be disturbed. Thanks for your reply. For so much of my Irish Catholic life from noon till three on Good Friday was a sacred time. have kept the hours, by the grace of God, since 1996. The only book I have ever purchased at the bookstore at The Basilica of the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception was the diary of the Polish mystic Helen Kowalska (Saint Faustina). I just noticed this today.

Could it be the ninth hour?

Peace
