LOTH as a tool

I have been reading the LOTH for about 9 months on the Metro subway or at lunch. This moring on the train a gentleman about sixty asked me if I was reading the Bible. Well yes and no I said its the LOTH and I 'm catholic. And then I described the varius readings. He wondered what version thr readings are from. NAB I said. Then he asked about the Vulgate Bible and I told him about St. Jerome. He asked why and who must read it. Itold him priest deacon and consecrated religious must but lay can. He wanted to know if I was going to be a priest. I said no I’m married but I was open to being a deacon. Then I had to describe the roles and duties of deacons and priests. That lead to a description of the sacraments and the priest acting in the person of Christ which intriged him. A half hour latter I missed my stop. Got off with him said bye.

This is now the fourth time people have asked whether it was the Bible or the LOTH. Maybe we need a missionary order using the LOTH.

Actually IMHO that order is called the Body of Christ! From The General Instruction of the LOTH:

1. Lay groups gathering for prayer, apostolic work, or any other reason are encouraged to fulfill the Church’s duty, [103] by celebrating part of the liturgy of the hours. The laity must learn above all how in the liturgy they are adoring God the Father in spirit and in truth; [104] they should bear in mind that through public worship and prayer they reach all humanity and can contribute significantly to the salvation of the whole world. [105]

   Finally, **it is of great advantage for the family, the       domestic sanctuary of the Church, not only to pray together to God but       also to celebrate some parts of the liturgy of the hours as occasion       offers**, in order to enter more deeply into the life of the Church. [106]

What a good little story. Im glad you were able to say more than, “No, this is not really a bible”. You planted a seed in the guy. The only thing which I hate in these situations is coming off all preachy and some sort of know it all.
