From the General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours, Memorials During Ordinary Time, No. 235 a): the psalms and their antiphons are taken from the current day and week, unless there are proper antiphons or proper psalms, as indicated for each such occasion;
Aug 29 is a Memorial in Ordinary Time. For Morning Prayer, there are proper antiphons for the Psalms, so per 235 a) these proper antiphons would be used. No problem.
However, the red instructions (p. 1240 Christian Prayer) indicates that the Psalms and Canticle should be those from Sunday Week I, page 707. The St. Joseph Guide tracks with this, also indicating use of page 707 for Morning Prayer.
This occurs on other Memorials as well. For example, Mary Magdalene July 22, Our Lady of the Rosary, Oct. 7, Guardian Angels, Oct 2, etc. Seems to be that whenever there are proper antiphons on a Memorial, the Sunday Week I Psalms/Canticle are called for.
I don’t understand where the use of the Sunday, Week I Psalm and Canticle comes from in these situations, since 235 a) seems to state that the Psalms/Canticle from the current weekday (Monday, Week II) should be used.
Best I can figure is that on some Memorials (but not all) the Sunday, Week I Psalms/Canticle “become” the “Proper” psalms, based on those red instructions.
Thanks for any comments or clarifications.
