LOTH & New Saints

I called the Catholic Book Publishing Co. to see what I need to buy in order to have the newly sainted people for my LOTH. They have a supplement booklet, but the CSR said that it has been updated since 1992. :hmmm: I was surprised that it’s been so long since they updated their supplement. My question is do you all just skip the new saints that have been added after 1992 since we don’t have anything to go by? Thanks for any information and suggestions.
 
There are a couple of options.

First of all if you know the “type” of saint (martyr, virgin, doctor, etc.) you use the Commons of that type.

In the commons there are “general” collects that you can use, just insert the name of the saint. These are intended for use until a proper collect has been composed for the saint. Most “new” saints that are optional or mandatory memorials will not be likely to have proper antiphons or hymns. These tend to be passed down from long tradition. For memorials you use the psalmody of the day; for the hymn you’re free to use the hymn of the day or from the Commons if there’s no proper hymn. Similarly you can use the Gospel canticle antiphon from the Commons or of the day, as well as the readings, responsory and intercessions either of the day or the Commons.

For the proper collect, you should try to obtain the ordo from your conference of bishops. For Canada, for instance, the ordo can be ordered here:

Most often the proper collect will appear in the ordo long before it is published in any updates of the LOTH.

This sounds really confusing, lol. I think I will just buy the 1992 supplement book and not worry about any new saints after that year. If they come out with a new supplement some day, then I’ll buy that one. Thanks for the explanation.🙂

Its not confusing at all. Some of the saints in the supplement book only have a listing as to the date and their history as there are no propers, all is taken from the proper of the day and the common.

If you have the guide book that gives you the page numbers it will direct you to the right common to use and when it is used.
 
I just received the supplement this week, I had to order a few things from CBP so I added the supplement. I’ll let you know how it works out but prior to having the supplement I just skipped the new saints.

I really REALLY hope the LoTH is updated soon with the new Grail Psalter, the updated saints prayers from the new Missal, update the anitphons and add traditonal hymns. Not that I have an opinion or anything… :cool:

Today is July 9, according to my St Josephs Guide (and Universalis) it is

Saturday of week 14 of the year
or Saint Augustine Zhao Rong and his Companions, Martyrs

Neither my copy of Christian Prayer neither the supplement has any info on Saint Augustine Zhao Rong.

(Just an FYI, it’s now St. André Bessette. And for some reason, in Canada we observe it in January).

It is only an optional memorial, so you’re not required to observe that today. Personally, I decided not to observe any of the optional memorials for the past week.

If you do want to observe it, you can take the prayer from the Commons (which in this case would be the Common of Several Martyrs). For days that you are “missing” (like Cardinal Newman) you can use divineoffice.org or even Universalis as a resource.
 
Thanks for the info CurlyCool. The addendum is for the US only and it hasn’t been updated since 1992. Another data point for those considering picking this up.

But the guide book is updated and directs you to the commons when necessary.

As has been noted not all saints get propers and most of those that do only get an antiphone for the canticles.

As for any update to the LoTH, it will be soon, but soon in Church time is measured in multiples of years. I foresee the update sometime in the next decade, closer to the end of it.

Thanks everyone for all of the information. I think I’m going to buy the supplement book even though it’s old. I can get it at Barnes & Noble for $1.96 so that’s not too bad. I’m also going to get the Saint Joseph Guide for the Liturgy of the Hours to help me out. I’ll just read wherever the guide tells me to. Hopefully I’ll get the hang of it eventually, and not feel so lost.

The ordo though, also has proper collects for newer saints for which there are no propers in LOTH, which is very useful.

BTW I follow the Benedictine calendar and today was Our Lady of Providence, and Monday is the solemnity of St. Benedict.

Do you really think it’ll take a decade? I understand the reference to Church time, etc but it shouldn’t be that long.

The New Grail Psalms have been approved so the Psalms are done. The new Missal is pretty much done so the prayers in the Common of the Saints should be done. I thought I read somewhere a new version of antiphons was ready. Even without the antiphons that’s a pretty big chunk of the LoTH, they could eliminate the Psalm prayers 😃

The selected readings don’t need to be changed, although IMO the hymns could stand some rework, but that would be selecting new ones not revamping the existing list 😛

It’s a bit of work. The psalms are ready, and I don’t think the biblical and other readings need anything (maybe whatever “updated translation” has been done, but that’s it).

But, the antiphons need updating for one. Some are taken from lines of Psalms, so some is probably done. Responsories need updating (again, some are taken from Psalms so they would be done). Gospel antiphons also need updating (some are biblical and some are from the Canticles, so they are really “done”).

I’m not certain, but I bet (at least some of the) the intercessions need to be completely re-translated. The prayers for Saints and Propers are done (as part of the missal translation), but the ones in the 4-week Psalter probably likewise need complete re-translation.

The English edition would also need to re-conform with the LOTH 2nd edition, as it is still from the 1st edition. I’m not sure of what all the changes are, but those would need to be done.
