What is the translation used for the psalms, canticles and readings on the Universalis website for morning and evening prayer?

From the FAQ’s on their own website,

What translations are you using?
The Scripture readings are from the Jerusalem Bible. The psalms are our own specially-commissioned translation. The translations of the non-biblical readings of the Office of Readings are from various sources.

I think this is because of the copyrights on the NAB and the ICEL translations.

If you want an online version that is the same as in the Catholic Book Publishing Co. breviary, you would need to go to ebreviary.com/ . There is a fee to subscribe to this site (again, probably due to copyright issues). They have a few of the hours online that you can look at for free. There is also the possibility of a free trial subscription at ebreviary.com/ebreviary/ebreviary.nsf/information2!OpenPage .

thanks I saw that but I just wondered if anyone had more info on what “our own translation” means.

By “specially commissioned” I assume that they just hired someone to do a new translation (although I have no idea what source documents they used). I don’t think you’ll find their translation anywhere else (except on other websites that have copied and pasted from Universalis).

I would take it to mean that it’s not approved by any Episcopal Conference and is not permitted for liturgical prayer.

Of course, people are free to use Universalis for devotional prayer, but aside from the unapproved translation, it has no hymns or antiphons, which are *integral *to the Divine Office.

That’s why I always jump the chance to state that if one’s intention is to pray the Divine Office AS the Divine Office, then one must use an approved translation or the Latin. That means, no Universalis.
