LOTH Prayer: Glory To/Glory Be [edited]

Hello, what is the difference between the Glory to the Father, to the Son, and the Holy Spirit… in the Liturgy of the Hours Book and the other Glory Be To the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit… Several words are different in these two versions. Is the first one only to be used in the Liturgy of the Hours? What do you use when you pray the LOTH? I can’t get used to praying two versions.

For readers who are not aware of the difference, in the Liturgy of the Hours, the words are:

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.

In most other situations, the words are:

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

The meaning is pretty much the same, so in that sense they are interchangeable.

Whenever I have prayed the Liturgy of the Hours with a religious community (when on retreat, etc.) the first version above is used; that is the one in the LOTH books.

When I have prayed it with a mixed group of religious and laity, the second form tends to prevail, because many of the laity are unfamiliar with the other version.

I’m sure God listens either way.

My experience has been the opposite (sort of - I’ve onyl heard the second version) because the second version (“world without end”) is used in the Divine Office UK/Aust/NZ books.

Somewhere along the line the “Glory Be” as we used to call it was retranslated and simplified to the version you now see in the LOTH.

In Latin it is

Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper, et in saecula saeculorum. Amen.

The “Be” (second word in English) is a minor translation difference.

The “forever” or “ever shall be, world without end” is a different translation of “et semper, et in saecula saeculorum.” From the little Latin I know, I would translate it “and always, and for all ages of ages.” However, translations tend to differ because their are sayings in English that sound a lot better, though perhaps aren’t literal. Like “forever and ever” or “forever.”

As for the LOTH, I use the “forever” one. I would suggest just using whichever is listed in your Ordinary.

This is just a translation question. “Glory be to the Father. . . world without end” is a really strange translation of either the Greek or the Latin. The new version attempts something closer to the original. The Orthodox, I think, do even better, using “unto the ages of ages.” I use the form used in the LOTH when praying the Hours: “Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.”
