The coming revised English translation of the Roman Missal has got me thinking about the closing prayers of the American LOTH. These prayers often seem linguistically awkward to me. Can someone tell me if the translation is close to the Latin books or another case of dynamic equivalence?

If the latter, does anyone have a more faithful translation of one of the prayers on hand for comparison? Are the translations in the English or African LOTH any better?

Hope everyone had a blessed Christmas. . .

To my knowledge, the LOTH books were “translated” from Latin into English by ICEL, the same committee responsible for the … aherm… less than accurate (the KIND way of putting things) English “translations” we had for 40-odd years.

Also, any work on the LOTH is not going to be done until after the Novus Ordo Missal is translated and put into effect. So, it’ll probably be another 5-10 years worth of ****** translations from ICEL.

(Which is a funny note, because I accurately translated German into English for an entire summer, and covered about 200 pages worth of information. One person, not even a committee… and I’m still a college student. 🤷)

Many of the closing prayers (Sundays and Saints’ memorials and feasts, for example) are the same as the Opening Prayer in the current ICEL missal. Therefore, they were translated with the same “dynamic equivalence.” Judging from the language, I would guess that the closing prayers in the 4 week Psalter were translated similarly.
