Hi,

I think I know the answer to this; yes you do pray Evening Prayer even if you go to Vigil Mass.

But it doesn’t feel right… Vigil Mass has basically said “Sunday” and to go back and pray a Saturday hours… I guess we pray Saturday night prayer.

Just want to make sure. I’m under no obligation to pray LOTH.

Thanks,

EP

Tonight’s Vespers, in Christian Prayer is:

SUNDAY EVENING PRAYER 1

There Is NO Saturday Evening Prayer.

Yea but it still begs pre-Sunday.

I know we skip night prayer after Easter and Christmas Vigil even if they let out before midnight.

If I had not prayed Vespers yet i suppose that would also be left out.

Thanks,

EP

We skip the hours that we skip for Christmas and Easter because the rubrics say to skip them. The rubrics for Sundays don’t say to skip Evening Prayer I if you’ve already gone to an anticipated Mass. Those who have an obligation to pray the Liturgy of the Hours pray Evening Prayer I on Saturday whether they’ve attended/served/offered a Saturday anticipated Mass. In fact, the timing of the hours doesn’t even matter that much; ideally they are prayed at the appropriate times of day, but the rubrics and the law don’t actually specify when they are bound to be prayed, only that they are completed (save for Compline, which can be prayed before or after midnight, and the Office of Readings, which can be prayed at any time of the day, and even in the night hours of the previous day, even before Compline).

In any event the point is moot if you’re not actually canonically bound to pray the Liturgy of the Hours. You can pray as much or as little as you find helpful to you.

Why not pray vespers/evening prayer BEFORE the Vigil Mass.
Because that’s way early! My evening Mass is at 4:00pm, and it simply doesn’t feel right to pray Vespers at the same time I should actually be praying Midafternoon Prayer.

No it doesn’t. Evening Prayer I is already a Sunday office, not a Saturday one. You can tell from the Magnificat antiphon and the Collect.

With one exception, there’s no such thing as Saturday Evening Prayer.
