LOTH - Way too Eastery during Triduum

Does anybody else think that the LOTH has far too much of an Eastery feel during Good Friday and Holy Saturday?

I’m trying to honor the death of the Lord and His absence from among us, and the LOTH keeps proclaiming His Resurrection. I thought the idea was to avoid mentioning it until Easter.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Eh, they’ve been chanting it like a funeral dirge for the past 3 days. That takes the Eastery feel right out of it. That and the black draperies all over the chapel and statues gives a real funereal pall to the whole proceedings.

I thought the ancient homily from Matins this morning was particularly effective. But that’s me.

My kids are “Lord of the Rings” fans, so I kept thinking "Lord of the _______ " but couldn’t think of any “H” words that made sense.

It’s not a re-enactment.

The texts of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Saturday all proclaim the cross AND resurrection.

A frequent refrain in the Byzantine Divine Office for Holy Week:

“We worship Your Passion, O Christ.
Show us also Your glorious Resurrection.”

Frequently these words are used, and even more frequently the idea is present. (Example: Change our sorrow to joy by Your Resurrection.)

The one makes no sense without the other. They are two parts of the same Paschal Mystery.

As we will sing at Midnight:

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling down death by death
And upon those in the tombs bestowing life.

Well, it is called the EASTER Triduum.

Nevertheless, what is so Eastery about it? During the Friday and Saturday Offices, I felt nothing but the mystery of the Cross and the Descent to the Dead. Even the regular responsories were suppressed and replaced with:

“For our sake Christ was obedient even to accepting death.” (Thu)
“Death on a cross” (Fri)
“Therefore God highly exalted him and gave him the name above every other name.” (Sat).

The Holy Saturday reading is especially moving. I always picture the icon of the Harrowing of Hell when I read that.
