I’m probably over-reacting, but I literally felt sick at mass today. I love the Passion, but today I was sorely tempted to get up and walk out.
The gospel was “acted out” by a bunch of people dressed up like the Bible characters. The priest and deacon left the altar during the gospel and had a seat in the pews with the rest of the “audience”. The text that was read by all these different characters was NOT the gospel according to Luke. They ad libbed and used some slangish terms too. I could not stop myself from tearing up during the gospel, and unfortunately it wasn’t because of the beauty of Jesus’ sacrifice. Heck, I could barely focus on the gospel truth with all the movement and acting and banging up there, as well as the general butchering of the actual words in the gospel!
So I came home and I’m looking at the GIRM: usccb.org/liturgy/current/chapter2.shtml#sect2
I’m sorry, but according to what I’m reading, what I saw today was just WRONG. I’m too upset to write to the pastor yet, but when I calm down I plan to.
Is it me? Should I just suck it up? Or was this crazy!
The entrance procession was such a spectacle I should have known and left right then. All the “Bible characters” in costume were part of the procession, which went up the center aisle (as usual), then back down a side aisle, across the entire church, then back up another side aisle. Including the catechumens, candidates and all these characters, I think they’re must have been at least 50 people in the procession. Yikes!
At the end of mass, father thanked everyone that “presented” the gospel and the “audience” all clapped. Gee, I thought the gospel was supposed to be “proclaimed”.
