I’m trying to learn as much as possible about the prayerful life of this blessed couple. I understand they had family morning and evening prayer. Does anyone know which specific prayers they prayed? Any information regarding their prayer life would be of great value to me if anyone is willing to share?

Thanks and God bless.

Yes the Martins were a very pious and devoute couple! I am a huge St. Therese fan myself. :D. However, when comparing them to a typical family of today though, it should be noted that they had several servants in their house. One of which did help in the care of the children. Housework was done by the servants, as was all the lawn and garden care. This made it much easier to attend daily mass and vespers and other things as such. Also you will hear of Mr Martin spending long hours in his study, same thing. A family without these servants should not expect to be able to have the same freedom for prayers, studies and spiritual retreats. Just so no one looses hope when reading about this wonderful couple! 🙂

They went to early morning Mass together, I think at 5:30 or 6:30? The neighbors used to hear them leaving and say, “Oh, we can sleep for another hour - it’s just the holy Martin family!”

St. Therese said they used to read passages from spiritual books as a family and discuss them after dinner. One of the books they had was The Liturgical Year by Dom Gueranger. You can find the full PDF online.

They kept strict fasts during Lent and at other prescribed times. They took pilgimmages to ask for favors or miracles or in thanksgiving for God’s blessings.

That’s what jumps to mind. If you want to get a better sense of the family, I recommend Story of a Family, which details their home life and really paints a beautiful picture of the Holy Martins and all their children.
