Lourdes and Miracles?

I’m completely new to Catholic Answers. I’ve gravitated here because I need an answer to a couple questions. I’m sorry if this isn’t the correct forum to present my questions…

First: Does anyone know a reputable site to obtain holy water from Lourdes? I’d appreciate the info, if anyone has it.

Second: Is it acceptable, as a last ditch effort, to offer the holy water from Lourdes as hope for a person with cancer?

My brother-in-law is dying from cancer. He isn’t Catholic, but believes in God… and is a very good person. Is there any harm in giving him holy water from Lourdes? Of course I would not give it as a superstitious attempt at a cure. And I would make it clear that God might very well have other plans than a cure. But I have great faith and want to offer something holy and tangible to this person we love. I don’t expect a cure… but miracles have happened, and at the very least my brother-in-law could find himself brought closer to God. Please give me information, if you can.

It must be so distressing for you and your family to accompany your brother-in-law through this distressing and sad illness. I am sorry.

I join with your prayers for your brother-in-law. In Jesus’ name I ask the Father to give abundant grace to him. I ask the Father’s comfort and courage for this good man and for all, like you, who love him dearly. He is very blessed to have you pray for him and desire to help him in this most difficult and painful period of his life.

I would be inclined to pray very much for your brother-in-law, but as you acknowledge, in the majority of instances the blessing God gives is not physical healing but spiritual benefit, and I would hope that your brother-in-law’s hopes wouldn’t be raised for physical healing…as unless God intends such a thing for some extraordinary reason, this could be a painful blow to him and others who love him. For those family members who may be weak of faith, such disappointment could be a fatal blow to faith if God does not have healing in intention.

I’m sure you are a comfort to your brother-in-law and your family. May God fill your live with many graces

Thank you very much for your responses. I will look into the sites offering water from Lourdes. I didn’t read about anyone being cured who didn’t actually go to the shrine… but who knows what grace the Holy Spirit might allow to accompany the water. I don’t like to be superstitious, but hope that some good might come of it, if not in a physical sense, then a spiritual one.

I, also, do not want to impart a sense of hope for a cure. They seem to be few and far between even for pilgrims to the shrine. I just feel very helpless to help my brother-in-law and his family and this is one thing I might share with him/them. Perhaps it will aid in acceptance of God’s will, whatever it may be.

I may just be 18, and young, and some may say I do not have experience in life. However, those people I shun, in my lifetime I have suffered with depression, the losses of 4 close members of my family. I have studied A Levels (qualifications from further education) whilst working two jobs, I have suffered poverty and I have suffered the questioning of ones faith. Therefore, please do not judge my opinion on this matter by my age.

May I say to you, my heart is with you and your brother in law and the rest of your family at this difficult time. I lost an uncle to cancer, and he was very special to me, however what you must do is always keep him alive in spirit. See him every day in the people he has left behind, his wife, his children, even yourself when you look in the mirror. For when he passes on, he becomes at one with God, he becomes a part of God.

I will pray for your Brother in Law, if you don’t mind telling me his name (You can send it in a private message), even just a first name and an initial etc, or some kind of symbol of him so that I can be specific in my prayer, however I will pray nonetheless.

Furthermore, yes, I do beleive the holy water will help your Brother in Law. We can be close to God all through our lives, however, there are two times in which we are closest to God. When we are born, and when we die. Death is the closest to God we will ever become, and despite it being a time of sorrow, pain and suffering, it is all worthwhile. This world is not heavenly, it is a terrible painful world at times, and sometimes people are too good to live in this corrupt place, therefore God takes them back, to be with him. However like many icons in history of religion and non-religiouse aspects, have had to suffer to get there. The journey is a long and tiring one, however the eternal rest of peace and wholeness with God is our reward. He will be greatly reward for what he has done, and let it be an example of strength and inspiration of spirit and life to all of you, as lessons can always be learnt. You can take this experience, and you can be bitter all of your life, or you can make it positive, and use it to better yourself and touch the lives of others in the same situation and even different situations…the choice is yours. Holy water I beleive possibly ease his pain, and bring emotional comfort to himself and the people around him, it is both a kind gesture and a holy anointing which will definetley bring God into the room and into his mind, heart, body and spirit even moreso. Also consider getting a sister on the ward or a priest to perform the anointing of the sick, which is a similar thing. He may be cured, but if he isn’t, let it not ruin your faith, let it be known that God wished to take him and you did not let it push you down, but you continued to hold your faith to your heart. Catholic or not he will reach heaven, there is no harm in trying with the holy water, and if it doesn’t work, it is definetly god’s will and you can rest assured he is in a far better position than now or before, as if holy water doesn’t work, then the only thing is can be is God, as he is the only one powerful enough.
