Joh 21:15 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Feed my lambs.
Joh 21:16 He then said to him a second time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord, you know that I love you. He said to him, Tend my sheep.
Joh 21:17 He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, Do you love me? and he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. (Jesus) said to him, Feed my sheep.
I’m studying this last chapter here in John. I’m using Stephen K. Ray’s book St. John’s Gospel.
While reading about the 2 words used for “Love” (Agapao and* Phileo*) It dosn’t seem to be cut and clear what is ment by the use of Jesus using agapao then phileo. While Peter uses phileo all three times. In Stephen K Ray’s book he dosn’t offer a clear meaning of it, just the two popular oppions.
While reading this it occured to me, Jesus and his deciples spoke Aramaic.
For example in explaining Peter as the “Rock” I explain to non catholics that Jesus spoke Aramaic!!! At that time, Aramaic was the common language of Palestine.
The Aramaic word for rock is “kepha”. “Kepha” is the only Aramaic word for rock. So Jesus said “you are Kepha, and on this kepha I will build my church” or “you are Rock, and on this rock I will build my church”.
So is there an understanding as to what is ment here in John 21 with the Aramaic word or words for love?
