What words were used to translate love from Hebrew to Greek in the LXX?

Are there any particular verses you are intersted in? I can look them up.

For example, Deut 6:5 “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”

Hebrew word is אהב, ahab
love; be loved (used broadly)

Greek word is ἀγαπάω, agapao /ag·ap·ah·o/
to treat with affection, love, to be well pleased

Same words are found in Lev 19:18

Another example, Song 1:2 “that you would kiss me with the kisses of your mouth! For your love is better than wine”

Hebrew word is דּוֹד, dod /dode/
one who is beloved and a romantic kindred spirit. the state or condition of romantic affection

Greek word is φιλέω, phileō
love, a primary love, not unlike ἀγαπάω (agapaō), et.al., yet semantically favors an affection based in interpersonal association

This is the word which carries the same root word used in Psalm 136 “The Great Hallel”. It’s the Hebrew word that is translated many different ways, love, loving-kindness, mercy, goodness, kindness.

In Psalm 136 the Greek word is ἔλεος [eleos /el·eh·os/] Strongs 1656

The Hebrew word is used in some form 245 times in the OT. Most prominently in the Psalms where it is used 127 times. I just noticed it’s the word translated as “love” in a verse that keeps finding me in recent days, Micah 6:8 “what does the Lord require of you
but to do justice, and to love kindness,
and to walk humbly with your God?”

I guess that tells me why I was drawn to your post!

I appreciate the comment but I’m not a scholar so use the information carefully. I just have some good tools available to me. Most of this information is coming from Logo Bible software. I would love to have all this information in my head. I’m not sure what you are specifically studying or where you are going with the information. You should always keep your studies within the framework of revelation that has been given to the Church. Use it to build your faith relationship with God as he intended. He has revealed that to the church without error.

I may be sounding preachy but I have seen and read people using translation to reach a deeper understanding with their faith. That’s what I try to do. But you also have to appreciate that translation is anything but an exact science, on the contrary it’s very murky. I have read, heard and spoken to people who have really gone astray through improper use of translation that was never what the original author intended to say. That’s why God gave us His great church with many true scholars and most importantly, a Magisterium to guide us and keep us on the right path. The path to Him.
