At present in Ireland, and perhaps elsewhere, the Church is going through a rough time. It seems at times very polarized with liberal and conservatives disagreeing. Perhaps this is a scandal to those Catholics who are struggling and to non-Catholics of good will.
Perhaps we should focus more on Christ and on our Catholicism.
Many of us disagree on moral issues, as the necessity for Sunday Mass, and the use of contraceptives, but should we focus more on our fellowship in the Church and our mutual support, rather than on our disagreements.
I am reminded of Phil 2:2 (NAB):
If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compassion and mercy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. (Phil. 2:1-2 NAB).
Should all of us Catholics try more to be of the same mind with the same love, united in heart?
After all we are all part of the same body. We should aim for unity among Catholics – one Lord, one faith, one baptism;e (Eph. 4:5 NAB) - more than for unity among all Christians.
I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." (Jn. 13:34-35 NAB)
