What would you rather choose love or respect? Which would make a relationship last longe?

I think you can’t have one without the other.

Love is having the best interest for someone. When you love someone, you are respecting their dignity as a human being. When you respect someone, you generally would be striving to do the best for that person.

With love, there is respect. With respect, there is love.

I suppose there are exceptions, but I’d say that’s a good general rule.

A man, or anyone for that matter, would have an extremely hard time convincing me that he loved me if he didn’t treat me with respect.

Exactly. We can’t even properly love our infants without respecting their dignity as human beings, let alone other adults.

Me too. It’s one aspect of gender stereotyping I’ll never understand - “women need love, men need respect.” Both need both, actually. Respect without love isn’t respect, it’s fear. Love without respect isn’t love, it’s controlling condescension.

from the posts above, we can say that if you love someone, you respect him.

but it doesn’t necessarily follow that if you have respect for someone, you love him

so i say…love!!

I must disagree with this.
Love is the core principle of our faith. Without it we are nothing (1 Cor 13:1-13).
With it, the world knows that we are disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ (John13:34-35).
This Love is to extend even to our enemies (Mt 5:44).

So - respect and love must be intertwined.

If I respect someone…I love them. doesn’t mean I want to marry them…;)…But certainly I want what is best for them and to see them in heaven…

Peace
James

Are they mutually exclusive? If you love someone, I believe you also respect them.
👍👍

This sums it all up. Very well said. It’s true that one can feel sexual attraction, infatuation or “sentimentality” without respect, but authentic love presupposes and requires respect. 😃

This. Love (Agape) respects the dignity of the person. Respect is a part of love.

Now if we reduce love to mere feelings of affection, respect may or may not be a part of it. Like the sort of affection we have for a cute puppy.

(Taking words at their default meaning in normal language. No theological dissections and twists.)

Hard to say or rather difficult to choose because it’s difficult to give up either of them. But at the end of the day I’d probably keep genuine respect without “love” over “love” without respect. The type of love which could be said to exist where respect is absent is the type of love I could live without.

But a longer answer would start with, “it depends.” Because I could understand that a woman who loved me could perhaps be unable to respect me to some extent or in some area due to a legitimate reason, i.e. some shortcoming in me. It’d be hard to expect her to pretend it doesn’t exist, that type of respect wouldn’t be worth much anyway. In which case it would be hard to scoff at the love she still felt despite the problem with respect.

But in a typical situation where someone just plain fails to respect you but claims to love you, then I’d rather have the respect. In which case I’d expect love to come about at some point, if perhaps without butterflies or without a sensual shock.
