Is it me being scrupulous, or are a lot of love songs idolatrous?

My girlfriend’s song and mine is “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz. The lyrics go:

I won’t give up on us
Even if the skies get rough
** I’m giving you all my love**
I’m still looking up

Aren’t we supposed to give God all of our love?

Or one of my favorites, Endless Love by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross when they say:
My love,
There’s only you in my life
The only thing that’s bright

My first love,
You’re every breath that I take
You’re every step I make

I may be being too scrupulous, but… What do you all think?

Also that song from The Godfather by Johnny Fontaine (Al Martino) “I Have But One Heart” where it says “you are my one love, my life, I live for you.” Don’t we live for God?

It’s really just hyperbole, just flowery form of language. I doubt those people literally mean that the person of their affection it the only thing they truly love. Romantic love is just one of those emotions that really fire up the passions. It makes you want to pour your soul to someone.

Nothing wrong with it. It’s just poetic use of language.

that’s what I was about to say. Poetic license…

There was a song in the 60s called “Fly Me to The Moon” One lyric is “You are all I long for, all I worship, and adore” This is not about God, It’s about one’s lover. (I have a driver’s license…It’s not too poetic though:shrug:)

So such songs aren’t sinful?
I don’t think so, unless you over analyze, but even then, it becomes another matter.

po·et·ic li·cense
freedom to disobey writing conventions: deliberate misuse of or disregard for the normal rules of fact, style, or grammar by a writer or speaker in order to achieve a special effect

😃

Much like the way companies deliberately misspell words used in the company or product name such as Nestle Quik, or Pennzoil, etc

Oh that gives me an idea for another thread…Thanks, you are correct!!😉

Wow! I actually gave someone an idea. Excuse me while I do a happy dance!:dancing:
Actually you just me another idea for yet another thread…In due time, my friend…

Ah, those silly love songs…

You’d think that people would have had enough of silly love songs.
I look around me and I see it isn’t so.
Some people wanna fill the world with silly love songs.
And what’s wrong with that?
Id like to know, 'cause here I go again…

Speaking of poetic license…and the question of love songs and God:
this can go both ways. There are a few ‘romantic’ songs that could be turned to God…
Ever see Sister Act??

**Nothing you could say
Could tear me away
From my God (my God)
Nothing you could do
‘Cause I’m stuck like glue
To my God (my God, my God)
I’m stickin’ to my God like a stamp to a letter
Like birds of a feather, we stick together
I’m tellin’ you from the start
I can’t be torn apart
From my God

Nothing you could do
Could make me untrue
To my God (my God)
Nothing you could buy
Could make me tell a lie
To my God (my God, my God)
I gave my God my word of honor
To be faithful, and I’m gonna
You best be believing
I won’t be deceiving
My God

As a matter of opinion, I think he’s tops
My opinion is, he’s the cream of the crop
As a matter of taste, to be exact
He’s my ideal, as a matter of fact.
No muscle bound man
Could take my hand
From my God (my God)
No handsome face
Could ever take the place
Of my God (my God, my God)
He may not be a movie star
But when it comes to bein’ happy, we are
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away
From my God

Cool it down now, ladies.
There not a man today
Who could take me away
From my God
Give them some of that deep shoulder action.
There’s not a man today
Who could take me away from my God
