Would it be wrong to have and use a Rosary even if you weren’t Roman Catholic?
Dear James

No it wouldn’t be wrong, it would be very beautiful if you did.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

In 1991 four of us started a Rosary Cenacle according to Father Gobi’s guidelines. We meet every Friday at 8pm and over the years we have had over 100 members and have started 6 new groups. The Rosary is our “weapon” against Satan. I pray that you always have the desire to say it with your wife and family and friends. You will be protected by Mary…always!

OK. Update time. A few months have gone by.

My love of the rosary has not reduced any. At first, I was only praying the “Glory Be”, “Our Father” and “Hail Mary” and I did not have the mysteries memorized. Even if I heard the mysteries they pretty much went right over my head because I was still concentrating on the verbal prayers.

I bought Father Groeschel’s book “The Rosary – Chain of Hope”. And I just finished reading what Father Groeschel wrote. I very highly recommend this book to anyone who does not have the Rosary Mysteries memorized. No real effort is required to memorize. Just read the book and you will remember what they are. It is easier to read than it looks, because there are a lot of good pictures and quite a few blank pages. I read one chapter a day. And only since January 1, I have learned all 20 Rosary Mysteries. I am now on Appendix Two in the book (Pope John Paul II’s Apostolic Letter “Rosarium Virginis Mariae” (and I think I’ll only read a little of it each day.

And the Rosary is a whole lot more interesting to pray when you also think about the Rosary Mysteries (I’ve only been doing this for a week). And in meditating on the Rosary Mysteries, I really want to pray at least five decades all at once – because they go together.

On January 4th, I noticed that the 15 mysteries of the Rosary really make even more sense if they are all prayed together in one prayer session – Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious. I was not yet up to the Luminous mysteries. On January 3rd, I prayed the Glorious mysteries in bed before falling asleep. When I got to Mary Queen of Heaven and Earth I really felt so blessed and loved. I had a strong sense of her personal presence standing by my side of the bed (I didn’t open my eyes). Yet even still, I am so imperfect and need to begin to understand and imitate Mary’s virtues.

During the visitation in the Gospel of St. Luke, Elizabeth asks “And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?” And to me the answer to that question seemed to be this. Mary was a close relative of Elizabeth and Mary loved Elizabeth. Elizabeth was family to Mary. That is why. And that is why Mary comes to us too. Because she is our Spiritual Mother and she loves us. And every natural mother is with her child when they take their first steps. So too, Mary was very close when I completed an important first step. On the evening of January 3rd, I had finished praying the conventional (150 ave) Rosary from memory. This “baby’s first step” explanation also explains a few other things I have experience so far.

I also started reading “The Secret of the Rosary” by St. Louis Grignion de Montfort. I just bought it (a new 2004 printing). The new printing includes a look at the new Luminous Mysteries and a sample of how they can be said in St. Louis de Montfort’s Methods 1 to IV. I think I’ll read only one new rose a day and also re-read the rose from the day before. The red rose introduction implies that I might obtain contrition for my sins.

Yesterday, I read the 5th Rose of “The Secret of the Rosary”. And I decided to enroll in “The Rosary Confraternity”. This week I already prayed more than 20 decades and I don’t think it will be a problem to continue – so why not. Besides that, look at all the amazing benefits of belonging. See rosary-center.org/ for details.

And according to rosary-center.org/nrosary.htm it looks like it is OK if I don’t pray the Fatima prayer or other extra prayers that are currently added by so many people (and I don’t know these prayers yet). They describe the Rosary as Our Fathers & Hail Marys and mental prayer (Rosary Mysteries).

Before signing up, however, do read the warning near the end of St. Louis De Montfort’s 5th Rose in “The Secret of the Rosary”.

If you only like the Rosary a little bit, and that is why you don’t pray it too much. Learn more about the Rosary. I think as you learn more about the Rosary, you will like it more and more.

And when you pray for Pope John Paul II’s intentions, please also pray for the “Year of the Eucharist” and pray for the Church to love the Rosary more. Because those are also obviously some of our Pope’s highest intentions.

Note to Anglican, Episcopal and other Christians: If you bought Father Groeschel’s book on the Rosary, I think you would like Chapters 3, 4, 5 and Appendix One. They are an examination of wonderful mysteries of the Christian faith. Too often, modern theologians explain away such things as the Transfiguration. I suppose too often many Christians neglect to meditate on His Crown of Thorns. I think it would be helpful for all Christians to recognize these mysteries as being more than just events that we can humanly explain.

Two years ago I was the leader of a Christ Renews His Parish retreat team during their formation period. I would always recommend some form of prayer or meditation for practice in the two weeks before our next meeting. About the third meeting I gave them a small leaflet on praying the Rosary and asked them to start slow with maybe one decade each day. When we met two weeks later I found that at least half of them liked it so much they were saying all five decades each day. One of the men was not Catholic and even he had a positive experience. I still meet these men from time to time these days and I can only admire them for their strength in the Catholic Faith. You see some of them were luke warm and some even became reverts on the their first retreat put on by the previous team. The Lord and His Mother are indeed faithful and caring.

not at all, if you are unfamiliar with or uncomfortable with the hail Mary, pray the our Father at the beginning of each decade, find the scripture for the mystery of the Rosary, (usually in Luke’s gospel, there are scriptural rosary books out there), and read a verse for each bead, ending with the doxology.

I’m in RCIA. I bought two rosaries
I like to sleep holding my rosary in my hand – is that normal?
Start to pray along and then fall asleep and let the Pope and Mary pray for me and my wife.
Hehe… Whenever I fall asleep with the rosary in my hand I wake up in the morning and my husband says…“Hey whats wrong with your face?”
I look in the bathroom mirror and there are bead marks in a track across my face from being pressed between my head and pillow. haha… :o

Reminds me of the time an imprint of the crucifix was left on my cheek…

No, I don’t think it’s normal, not by the world’s standards.

The rosary didn’t come about until maybe the 13th century, and I think that reflects that its development was at a time of over a millenium of maturing of the Christian faith. I think that devotion to the rosary reflects a level of Christian maturity and I certainly do not criticize anyone who has not yet attained that level of maturity.

On my own, and not influenced by any evangelical ideas, I stopped saying the rosary for some years. I had only occasionally made that devotion. I was also puzzled by why we should pray to Mary anyway. If she’s so great a ‘Mother’ why do we need to pray to her? Would she be less kind to us if we didn’t say the rosary or other prayers to her? Why? How could I diminish Mary by not saying the rosary?

I think my recent resurrection of saying the rosary occurred after listening to Fr. Corapi. He was particularly talking about Mary’s acceptance of her calling to be the mother of Jesus. He humanized and personalized her decision and it made a great impression on me.

I found that I was delighted by saying the rosary. Someone had given me a beautiful rosary, not just a plain style that you might think a man should use. It is something that feels good every time I have it in my hands. I can’t recommend enough having a nice rosary.

And, there’s one more big thing. If you listen to the Bible skeptics who are numerous in the U.S., particularly bent on making sure we all know their opinions about what parts of the Bible are “fiction,” you may also know (heck just by reading Time or Newsweek last month) that the nativity narratives of Matthew and Luke are all fiction. If that is so, then “hail Mary full of grace the Lord is with thee” AND “blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb” are FAKE! SO…I particularly relish saying the rosary because I don’t happen to agree with them, and I think devotion to the rosary is the best weapon against these views. I say one rosary for particular intentions and I invite you to join me in one rosary for the redemption and conversion of these skeptics.

Yet again? I read that the first time almost 15 years ago on Time. I guess they rehash the same cow manure whenever a Republican is elected president. 🙂

Saying that St. Luke’s depiction is a fairy tale is calling him a liar in his 1st chapter. Let’s see, either St. Luke is a liar or these “scholars” are clueless. That’s easy.

Loving the rosary is a very beautiful thing. Now only is it normal; it is a lovely blessing. We honor Our Lady with the rosary as she seeks to lead us to her Son, Jesus. It is a lovely way to meditate on the entire life of Christ. I am never without my rosary and simply carrying it with you is a way to honor Mary, the Mother of God.

Wars have ended by the recitation of the rosary. When I need any medical procedures, I hold a rosary in my hand and pray; it always helps. Try this: Next time you are at a doctor’s office and someone is taking your blood pressure, take a deep breath and say a Hail Mary, slowly. I bet your pressure will be normal or at least lower than usual.
God Bless you on your journey home.

It’s funny… the Lord has a sense of humor and he knows us better than we know ourselves.

When I made the decision to become Catholic I also made the decision to NOT pray the Rosary. I wasn’t really interested in it because I thought it was repetitious and boring. Well, one night I was watching EWTN and a priest was on (maybe it was Father John Corapi, but I can’t remember for sure) and he was telling a story about a family he once visited who had small children. He was going to pray the rosary with the family when these little kids, 4 to 5 years old, jump up and start shouting, “Can we pray the rosary in Latin?!? Can we pray the rosary in Latin!?!” Shocked, the Priest asked, “You know the rosary in Latin?” Sure enough they did… the whole thing.

So the priest admonished his audience to learn the rosary in Latin; the mother language of the church. If little kids could learn it, he said, so can adults. Well, that did it for me. I became facisnated with the idea of praying the rosary in Latin. That was about eight months ago. Since then I’ve learned all the rosary prayers in Latin except for the “Salve Regina” and the final prayer and I will know those before I receive first communion. And while I sometimes skip praying it every day, I pray it more often than not. The Lord knew that I needed to develope a deep prayer life and he showed me a way that would inspire me to do so. :yup:

I pray the rosary everyday too. Though I only have one rosary at this time, I plan to get more as I can afford them (and also plan to get a few of the free ones out there). I have fallen asleep saying the rosary too.

Don’t necessarily try this.

But,
I bought a fairly-decent-but-inexpensive Rosary that would do the job but not disappoint me if I lost it. Before my colonoscopy at the hospital this morning, I was able to first talk with the anesthetist (I was concerned about getting too much of a particular drug). I held my Rosary in my hand (as I often do when I sleep). I only experienced a time of normal sleep and do not remember any pain or any sensation from the procedure. My Rosary was still in my hand when I awoke. The anesthetist told me they only used 1/6 the normal amount of the “versed” drug. Perhaps they used the normal amount of the other drug, but I’ll bet they didn’t need to administer as much as they planned to.

I’m only in RCIA. But I suppose that one of the most important characteristics of a Rosary that is good for you is this: How good does the Rosary feel in your hands? For example, my hands and fingers are large so I don’t like smaller beads too much. If you don’t like the way your Rosary feels, go to a store and try to find one that is better for you. You probably can find a Rosary for less than $20 that seems to feel just right.

Do have a Catholic Priest bless your Rosary, if you haven’t had it blessed.

And I figure there is no harm in dropping the Rosary into Holy Water some time. Perhaps I think that way because I used to be a Baptist.

Update: I still love the Rosary and it is such a blessing to have the ability to pray and to pray the Rosary.

I had been active in reading and posting to the Catholic Answers Forums since I was out of work for quite awhile.

I had been out of work for more than a year). The day that my Rosary Confraternity registration certificate came in the mail was the very same day that I got a telephone call with news that I got my current job. I now have a job that is suitable work. With two weeks paid vacation a year, some personal leave days as well, and good health insurance.

Six months later, I’m still working on the same job. The managers love my work. I never had health insurance that was this comprehensive.

If you want to know more about the Rosary Confraternity, check out rosary-center.org/

If you already love the Rosary and pray it at least once a week, then I think you have nothing to lose and a lot to gain if you will join the Rosary Confraternity.

Praying at least some of the Rosary on a regular schedule is a great way to increase the presence of the gospel in daily life.

June 19, 2005 was the one-year anniversary of that very special day in the Catholic bookstore. That was also Fathers Day this year (in USA). I know that God wants me to be a better father to my children. And to be a better example and to somehow see about providing religious education for them.

“If you say the Rosary faithfully until death, I do assure you that, in spite of the gravity of your sins ‘you shall receive a never-fading crown of glory.’ Even if you are on the brink of damnation, even if you have one foot in hell, even if you have sold your soul to the devil as sorcerers do who practice black magic, and even if you are a heretic as obstinate as a devil, sooner or later you will be converted and will amend your life and will save your soul, if-- and mark well what I say-- if you say the Holy Rosary devoutly every day until death for the purpose of knowing the truth and obtaining contrition and pardon for your sins.”

St Louis de Montfort, Secrets of the Rosary.

This quotation is very interesting to me. For many years I have had a lovely rosary that belonged to my grandmother, but until very recently I have seldom ever tried praying the rosary. I did, however, find that if I was hurting emotionally it would give me some comfort to just hold onto the rosary or pray with it in my hands. In the last few weeks, I have been praying the rosary every day. And without ever expecting it, I have been finding that I have the willpower to avoid some sins that I normally have a great deal of difficulty refraining from.

Today is my 2nd anniversary of joining. And it is the second anniversary of starting my new job.

A full year later I noticed another “coincidence”. The date on my Rosary Confraternity registration certificate was February 2, 2005 (Presentation of the Lord). That was the same day I started work. At first I was disappointed because I had to wait a little more than a week before the job began. But now I see that it is confirmation that Our Lady got me my job and that belonging to the Rosary Confraternity (and praying the Rosary) is a very real thing.

Two years later, I’m still working on the same job. The managers love my work.

I now have a job that is suitable work.
Actually, I got the my description about six months after I started work. If I had seen the job description before I got the job I probably wouldn’t have applied because I wouldn’t have considered that I was qualified. I work with electrical engineers in a radio-frequency engineering department and I don’t have an electrical engineering degree (or any other engineering degree). Even so, my co-workers consider that I seem to be an engineer and have the required abilities. And I greatly improved their engineering tools making their work easier.

Not to brag on my abilities at all, but to highlight Our Lady’s ability to meet needs.
