Love your siblings, even if they don't want to talk

Benedict XVI has described the importance of the family in society, this is a theme that always comes up. I’ve heard a middle-aged teacher say how she can’t believe how she sees twins who don’t stand up for each other.

Even beyond childhood, sibling communication is still important. When talking about stories of “regrets”, I heard another teacher say something about how she wished that she had spoken to her brother 10 years older than her. As an adult he got into steroids, had poor self-esteem and eventually committed suicide. Even if you don’t like a family member, you should still talk to them.

I have a sibling that I avoid talking to because it inevitably results in hurt feelings and conflict. There is so much unresolved family trauma there, and so few things we have in common otherwise that it is usually non-productive.

I do agree that we should pray for them, and keep communication open by sending cards. It is important to communicate as much as possible while avoiding things that will further damage the relationship.
