Fr. Barron never said Hell wasn’t eternal. This is a heresy that was condemned by the Church a long loooong time ago. Origen stated that Hell was only temporary, and that all would eventually end up in Heaven. Origen remained obstinate in this heresy and was excommunicated. It is Catholic Dogma that Hell is for eternity. I really think that Fr. Barron should publicly recant this error and correct himself.
He merely considered than an empty Hell was a possiblity.
And this wasn’t his idea: he was quoting the late theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar.
At Fatima, Our Lady taught the children this prayer:
O my Jesus, forgive us our sins,
save us from the fires of hell,
and lead all souls to heaven,
especially those who are most in need of thy mercy.
Now, Our Lady does not believe in an empty Hell: in fact, she showed the children a vision of an agonizing, populous Hell. But the fact that she sanctioned the use of this prayer shows that, even if Barron and von Balthasar go a little too far, hoping that a given person may be saved - particularly if his situation is desperate - is perfectly legitimate.
I don’t agree entirely with Father Barron, for the reason given above. But calling a priest in good standing with the Church “a heretic” is a grave matter. I think you ought to publicly recant this error and correct yourself.
