The religious ed directors/ coordinators in our county meet monthly. Once a year they host a retreat for catechists. This year’s retreat will be given by a nun who is also a Reiki Master.

Granted, the retreat is not about Reiki, but still . . .

My boss (the pastor) is away, but I feel pretty confident that when he finds out, he will not want our catechists to attend. I’m hoping we can do our own retreat (that will include Mass!!) instead.

The nun might know some Reiki, but I doubt she’s a true master. A true master would have decades of training.

That said, I could see the Church having a problem with this situation.🙂

Ok, so I’m totaly ignorant… what’s so wrong with Reiki? Ok so it’s some asian energy-type of healing, like acupuncture, etc… what’s to say this is not actualy real and useful?

Not that I believe God to be an ‘energy’, He’s more personal than that!

Ok, so give it to me!

👍

What in G*ds good name is Reiki? Is it one of those “New Age” things?

Since Reiki therapy is not compatible with either Christian teaching or scientific
evidence, it would be inappropriate for Catholic institutions, such as Catholic health care
facilities and retreat centers, or persons representing the Church, such as Catholic chaplains, to
promote or to provide support for Reiki therapy.

Some people have attempted to identify Reiki with the divine healing known to
Christians. They are mistaken. The radical difference can be immediately seen in the fact that
for the Reiki practitioner the healing power is at human disposal. Some teachers want to avoid
this implication and argue that it is not the Reiki practitioner personally who effects the healing,
but the Reiki energy directed by the divine consciousness. Nevertheless, the fact remains that for
Christians the access to divine healing is by prayer to Christ as Lord and Savior, while the
essence of Reiki is not a prayer but a technique that is passed down from the “Reiki Master” to
the pupil, a technique that once mastered will reliably produce the anticipated results. Some
practitioners attempt to Christianize Reiki by adding a prayer to Christ, but this does not affect the essential nature of Reiki. For these reasons, Reiki and other similar therapeutic techniques
cannot be identified with what Christians call healing by divine grace.

Actually, you can be a Reiki Master in just three short seminars. That’s all it took for me in 1997. I wasn’t a practicing Catholic at the time, and didn’t know the Vatican–rightly–disapproved.

God have mercy on her soul. She is responsible, as the leader of this, for the error that she teaches them, and partially responsible for their sin so-doing. What a terrible thing.

thank you for your answer Earnest Bunbury, I do understand that Reiki is not appropriate in a Catholic seminar.

But I don’t understand, honestly, what is so wrong with energy-type healing, in itself. What if we can heal with our energy, what would be wrong with that? Humans have the faculty of our minds, which can be used for good works, we have hands to build buildings, prepare food, nurse the sick, etc… why not use any other faculty we have?

Just honestly wondering,

:blessyou:

Thanks for coming forward, Phaedra777! Please explain me why it is disproved by Vatican.

If we could heal with our own energy using science, that’s okay. But Reiki uses divine consciousness from the human itself, which makes it an evil when one takes the power of God for himself.

That article explains in good detail the various reasons why Reiki is frowned upon. A biggie is the whole “call on your Reiki guides” thing.

Angels, good.
Unknown guides, bad! 🙂
That’s very informative, thank you.

I agree mostly with the article, but my conscious still tells me: if we do have untapped healing ‘powers’ or capacities, if I may call them as such, what would be wrong with using them? Why impose llimits on man’s capacities and capabilities? Because we may become self-inflated and take ourselves as Gods? ok, I could see the danger for one’s humility, definitly. But that isn’t a really a criteria, in the same way we build fire stations and have paid firemen who put out fires, they are using man’s capacities to act, and this isn’t an obstacle to their humility… I definitely need to meditate and discuss this issue further.

Any of “man’s capabilities and capacities” all stem from God’s power. With the practice of Reiki people are seeking to harness powers (God’s powers) and use them in their own manner and also without attributing Him as their source. That is where the problem lies from my (limited) understanding on the topic.

As an aside, maybe the nun studied Reiki in the past and has since abandoned the practice? I just thought it could be a possibility that she has stopped her involvement.

Does the retreat actually include reiki? Or is it a perfectly ordinary retreat being lead by a nun who happens to know some reiki?

From the viewpoint of a true Reiki master, this would be a joke. A Reiki master as understood by the true practitioners requires certain steps that take decades to master.

This is like those martial artists that get their black belt within a year. It is considered a joke by those that actually earn that rank the traditional route, and is demonstrated as a joke when one of these people actually step into a ring with one of the those that earned that rank the traditional way.

With regard to the OP, I believe that the body has various energies that can be manipulated, but there is a lot of hocus pocus going on with many of methods (not limited to Reiki).

Hocus pocus is right! My thought is there is no such thing as a true Reiki Master because there is really no such thing as Reiki! Folks should save their money and certainly not study it for decades.

I think I posted originally that the retreat is not about Reiki, but is being given by someone who I’m told (no first hand knowledge - I plan to find out for myself) is into Reiki. The DRE who spoke about her called her a breath of fresh air, and commented that sister has no problem saying she doesn’t agree w/ certain teachings and often expresses her own opinions when speaking.

Even if the retreat is not about Reiki, I find it problematic that she would be asked when she may be part of something that the USCCB has ‘denounced’. Why would we offer our catechists that kind of formation?

The retreat includes no Mass (I asked) and the church hosting it, does not have a morning Mass on Saturday. I am going to propose to my boss that we do our own retreat so that we know exactly what kind of formation our catechists are receiving. And we can include Mass and confessions. 👍

OK, these seem like more valid reasons for being concerned about the retreat than something a person may have studied in the past but doesn’t endorse now. I assume your ‘boss’ is the pastor? Any plans to do your own retreat will need to be approved by him, including scheduling a Mass and confessions.

She is a Mercy Sister? We have the same issues here.

It is the abandonment of Jesus in all this that concerns. Of His healing… and also as here many of those who turn to alternative ways are rebellious against the teachings of the Church. Which speaks for itself of course and is the real test.
