Sunday’s homily went like this; You have to have a loving relationship with God before you can committ to obeying the Ten Commandments. Can someone explain this to me. I always thought obeying the Commandments would lead to a more loving relationship with God. Any thoughts on this would be helpful to me. Thanks

Since I didn’t hear the homily I can only comment on what you’ve presented. It seems to me that there is a point to be made both ways. First of all, obedience is meaningless without love of God. Love of God also presumes faith and anything done outside of faith in God is of no value in our relationship with God.

Obedience to God, whom we love, will lead to a greater closeness to God and will naturally increase our love of God. It would seem that there exists a synergistic effect between love and obedience when we are in a loving and grace filled relationship with our Lord.

I hope this helps.

Kind of like a discussion I had with a Protestant friend. He said faith is the most important thing of all. I said, no, love is. He said, if you have faith you automatically have love. I said, no - if you have love, faith will follow.

It sounds like a circular debate.

BTW - I still think love comes first and all others will follow.

It does sound like a circular debate doesn’t it? The homily was in reference to EX 20:1-17 on the presentation of the Ten Commadments to the Israelites. They had a loving relationship with God before they were presented with the Commandments. Maybe I am wrong here, but I would thnk the Israelites were already living their lives by the guidance of some of these Commandments prior to actually being presented with them.
