Jesus:
But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you
What does it actually mean to love your enemies?

How does this practically apply to:
  • People who have personally wronged you
  • Political opponents/rivals
  • Enemies in wartime
  • People trying to destroy your religion
  • Satan/demons

The hardest part of the bible. Pray for those who hurt you. Do not return evil for evil. Your enemies are all those you listed.

This is where I fail the most. I can be very good to my friends but cross me once and I will ignore you for life.

Jesus told us it’s easy to love those who love us. No big whoop there. Don’t have to be a Christian to do that.

Jesus says to love enemies why? First, natural enemies test members of a species and cause they to become strong. People who test your patience and who get you upset, these are the people you need to love because if you are like that you are not producing “fruit of the spirit” and if “you shall know them by their fruits” then you might find that you are someone who is only “peaceful” and “gentle” when the conditions don’t test. Big deal. Are you peaceful and gentle when someone gets in your face and tells you something deeply offensive? If not then your peace is not from Christ because it is comfort which is conditional rather than undonditional.

You don’t go to a gym to use equipment that helps you move. You go to find equipment that resists you so that you may build up your muscle by practicing working against it. You cannot build up your mental muscle without being challenged with ideas to master, and learning from mistakes. You build up your spiritual and emotional muscle by learning to stay calm when people say all kinds of bad things about you and your beliefs and your loved ones and your political party or whatever.

Another way to look at an enemy is like a vaccination. You get infected with something that doesn’t kill you, and your body build up antibodies against it so that if a more serious infection threatens, you can fight it off. Once you’re had a few successes with not getting upset while others around you are hysterical, that means your emotional/spiritual immune system is starting to kick in.

If our peace and happiness depends on circumstances, then we are just copying whatever we see. If we are the light of Christ, then we produce fruit of the spirit in all situations. The more tough situations we get in, like a black belt, the more we can get through them without “losing our cool” or failing to “produce fruit.”

For many, forgiveness is a difficult virtue to master. When we learn the power and wisdom of forgiveness, we are bound to have reached an advanced level of spiritual maturity. Regardless the nature of any possible abuse that we may have endured, nor the severity of that abuse, full recovery from abuse cannot be achieved until we truly forgive our abuser(s). Any anger or resentment we hold within us, live and thrive within us, and become a part of our very self. We will never rid ourselves of this anger and resentment until we experience true forgiveness towards all. Seeing our tormentors suffer a thousand times over will only add to our own misery.

On the other hand, to endure unnecessary torment and misery is never righteous, but a perversion. Also, the righteousness of forgiveness should never involve our condoning abuse or any other forms of evil.

True forgiveness requires our valuing peace and love above all else. Experiencing forgiveness towards those who have wronged us resembles perfect love more so than perhaps any other human experience. Forgiveness involves recognizing and valuing the potential for love that exists within every human soul, including our own soul. Sins cannot be completely forgiven until we forgive, and find an inner peace with, everyone who has ever wronged us; for every ounce of anger and resentment that we hold against any other(s), there will surely exist an ounce of sin held against us – for harboring anger and resentment within our self is sin.

The Golden Rule states: “do unto others as you would have them do unto you!” Our forgiving everyone, especially those we consider our enemies or adversaries, is to demonstrate to God that we are worthy of His forgiveness. Likewise, to find love for all our enemies and adversaries is to demonstrate to God that we have suffered long enough with our anger and resentment, and we are ready to receive His love.

Again, to experience the true power and wisdom contained within the virtue of forgiveness is to develop great spiritual growth!

LOVE! ❤️

Beautiful post! :heaven:

Forgiveness black belts. Tested and true, we can forgive you. :nunchuk:

To pray for them, to forgive them to speak to them kindly to respect them. Believe it or not, sometimes it is very loving to set a boundary
How does this practically apply to:

*]People who have personally wronged you
If it happened once, forgive them. If it happened twice, tell them in love how they hurt your. If it happened a third time, then pray for them but don’t go out of your way to be near them
*]Political opponents/rivals
Not sure how that is automatically an enemy. After all, do we not have the right to our opinion. If I play a game or tennis, the person on the other side of the net is my rival, but not my enemy. I will play a fair game and leave it at that
*]Enemies in wartime
Duck under shelter
*]People trying to destroy your religion
Pray for them and make sure you are demonstrating a good example of Jesus
*]Satan/demons
ummm… don’t think we need to love Satan

That’s a good point. So many of us are taught that our political opponents are mean and evil and taking us the wrong way, that it can be easy to see them as enemies.

I think Catholics in particular don’t do this well, at least in public. As a group, it seems like we are about as loud and judgmental of others’ opinions as any group out there.
