Low vs. High

So tell me, are you a Low mass fanatic or High?

Both admittedly have their immense beauty to back them up, but whenever I sit down and see six lit candles, I breathe a sigh of discontent. I love the silence, the simplicity is amazing. Give me latin, give me silence, give me my well loved low mass!

Is it just me or do you sometimes just get distracted and lost during high mass? I’ll be caught up in the polyphony, look up and the priest is two pages ahead of me!

In all good and honest charity, with personal experience and preference, which do you like best? High or Low? Why?

you would love where my parents go to mass. they have a low mass at 8am and a high mass at 10am every sunday… you get to pick. well unless its a holy day that calls for the solemn high mass.
 
What’s Low mass and High mass,
I don’t think I’ve heard of that before.
I’ve heard of weekday mass.

Low Mass and High Mass are terms used for the Tridentine Mass which was the norm pre-1970’s.

The High Mass is the ideal while the Low Mass (sometimes called Missa Privata) is Mass said by a priest without music or incense and without the assistance of a deacon and subdeacon. In practice, Low Mass was said in an inaudible voice between the celebrating priest and server(s). Thus the name “Missa Privata” came into use.

Low Mass originated in the early Middle Ages as a shortened or simplified form of Solemn Mass. Catholic practice had been that there was (at most) one Mass in a monastery or parish church each day. However, over time it became necessary for a variety of reasons to celebrate more than one on the same day. It also became customary for monasteries to ordain most of their monks, though originally monks were almost all laymen, and for every priest to say a daily Mass. For a while, concelebration, whereby several priests took a full priestly part in offering Mass, provided all with the possibility to celebrate Mass each day, but this custom died out. Low Mass is considered to be a necessity that falls short of the ideal, which is Solemn Mass.

The low Mass sort of resembles the simple modern-day weekday Mass with no music, except you can’t really hear anything the priest says in the Low Mass, especially if you’re sitting at the back of the church.

Six altar candles may be lighted at a High Mass while four altar candles are used for the Low Mass (sometimes only two on the feasts of lower rite).

I go to the Extraordinary rite myself,
Though I’m not exactly used to the crowd or the kneeling,
From going to the Ordinary rite for most of my life,
I guess I go to the Low mass. 🙂

The 11:00 High Mass at the FSSP chapel in my town is standing-room-only. You’ve got to get there before the pre-Mass Rosary starts to get a good seat.

That’s interesting. Perhaps there would be a great demand for the Tridentine Mass if it were offered at every parish.

We’ve got more demand than capable priests. Kansas City has an ICRSS parish, a FSSP parish, the SSPX American Headquarters, a diocesean TLM (in nearby St. Joseph, MO), and I’ve even heard (unsubstantiated) rumors of a priest who offers the TLM for a group of sedevacantists.

It is my opinion that we could easily support 2 more Masses in other parts of the city without a problem. But there are not enough able priests to serve the community.
 
You were minus a category - Both but not necessarily equally…I like:

Low Mass, since I’m only human. It’s shorter.
High Mass, when I can sing, too - (Usually they only allow the choir to sing at High Mass.)

I sing anyway. Not loud, but I do sing. The first one I went to, there was an older lady in front of me just singing away. Most of what they were singing was very familiar and I sang along.

BTW, at my parish every Mass including the Latin Mass is packed.
