Luke 11:21-22 and justification of Pacifism

Luke 11:21-22

"When a strong man, fully armed, guards his castle, his property is safe. But when one stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his plunder."

I don’t know why I’ve never noticed these verses but reading them makes me wonder how Christian Pacifists can defend their Pacifism when these verses clearly state that, sometimes ,violence is necessary.

Clearly, Jesus is stating that if the strong, righteous man isn’t armed and is attacked, he will be overtaken. Hence, defending yours, your family and yourself is necessary and even one’s duty.

There are several varieties of parables found in the New Testament. Some point readers to “go thou and do likewise,” and some point in just the opposite direction.
In the parable quoted, I note that a resort to physical strength, weapons and armor does not protect the strong man.

What you say is the truth. Its the “Just War” theory.

BUT the REAL Teaching message here IMO is Spiritual warfare. Potentionally fatal and certanly more prevelant. [At least for the time being]

Life fully and publically our Faith

Share it eagerally and with charity and clarity when God presents the opportunity

Defend it when ever necessary

Jesus is not talking about legitimate defense. Satan is the “strong man” in this context. The Power of God overwhelms Satan and despoils him of precious souls who are then free of his grasp.

I completely understand that the parable was meant for an entirely different and deeper meaning than the ‘just war’ argument. I realize that im simplifying Jesus’ parable. My point is that he was using an analogy that would be understood because it was common sense.

I also note that more often than not people **didn’t ** understand Jesus’ teaching even though his imagery was so familiar.
