The way I understand it is to humble yourself and do for others without expecting anyting in return and your reward will be heavenly.Help me understand what Jesus meant about not inviting our family to dinner.

It’s also a parable about the kingdom of God in heaven…
Do not presume that you will have an honored place at the wedding feast in heaven, or that you will even get into heaven. Even the Holy Father must not presume that he is going to sit at place of honor in heaven, but must put himself last and become a servant of all. That is what we all must do, become servants of each other and defer to each other.

I understand humility but what does that have to do about not having family over for dinner?

Luke 14:12-14 (NABRE):
A better explanation of this is found in Luke 6:32-35 (NABRE):12 Then he said to the host who invited him, “When you hold a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.
13 Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;
14 blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
It is saying to show love and kindness to those from whom you would not expect any in return (as you would from your own family) and you will be rewarded in the Kingdom of Heaven.32 For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.
33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.
34 If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit [is] that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount.
35 But rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
