The Church teaches that Mary was sinless, so it was a sin offering, but only to fulfill the requirements of the Mosaic law. She would have sinned if she did not follow the law of Moses.

Edward Everett, the statesman and orator, gave a two hour speech before Lincoln’s five minute Gettysburg Address. Everett was asked by a reporter about Lincoln’s “poorly written” speech on the train later that day, to which he replied that Lincoln had said in five minutes what he himself had failed to say in two hours.

I believe it safe to say that Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is the most sharply focused, poignant and best remembered presidential speech of all - and by far the shortest.

22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”

Mary offered a sacrifice… Sacrifices were offered for sins? Mary had sins?

Mary obeyed the Law of Moses, yes, but that doesn’t mean she was sinful. I’m sure if
someone told Mary at the time that she was in fact NEVER a sinner in the first place,
that it might have come up as quite a shock to hero not that I would know ).

Think about it: How must Mary have felt or thought
when she was first addressed as “Full of Grace” ?

Furthermore, Joseph was still a sinner, but sin–issue aside, the Law was the Law,
the Law of the Lord. When the Torah told you have to do these things, & you lived
in those times, you did it!

It WOULD have been a sin to NOT abide by the Law of Moses,
so Mary and Joseph together obeyed the Law ( not saying that
Joseph was sinless like Mary was ).
