Luke 8:22-25
Jesus Calms the Storm
22One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
24The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”
He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25"Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples.
In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”
Upon meditating on this one, I came up with the following:
They were in their minds thinking they were in danger, this then moves to them thinking as well as they thought they were all perishing , for he already stated for all of them to go across the lake and he never told them they were going somewhere, then faced an obstical that prevented them, there was no danger while they were together in spite of what they witnessed around them, there was no way he was going to perish at that moment as well, his time has not yet came and he knew it, the rest of them were told it by him prior.
He Said to them, as in rebuke, for they were still not having faith in him, it was still with the world in spite of all of the other miracles they witnessed. They were afraid, both from the rebuke as well as his demonstration of power. They marveled over how the wind and water obeyed him, how much more should all of them do likewise, yet they still did not fully know in their hearts who he was, which is why they still asked, “who is this?”.
As we travel through our lives with him, there will be times of trouble, just like the winds and waters, that while we may not see a possible way through, he always keeps us safe, as long as we are with him, and we should rely upon his power and strength to see us through in spite of what the world is presenting to our faces. If we are called by him to travel, or live, in our lives, we should have faith that he will see us through because he never leads us somewhere and then tells us we have to turn back because the obstical is too big for him to overcome.
He fell asleep which means, he wanted to see if they would have faith to walk on their own two legs without his constant reinforcement.
