Luke 9:26 and being ashamed of God

Assume you are in your room, you shut the door, you are praying and somebody walks in on you. You stand up and make it seem like you were not doing anything (all being really brief). You think this person (although they know about your faith) is likely to complain about finding you praying at some point in the future and/or even laugh at you (yeah I know this sounds weird but you have past experiences with this). At the very least things are going to be awkward afterwards so you want to avoid this person knowing how invested you are in your religion, you’d rather they know you have and that is it, no details needed. This person has previously gotten angry with you for crossing yourself in public and says you look weird and pathetic when you pray because you tend to whisper and look weird doing that. Besides kneeling is a very vulnerable position to be in and you don’t want her to see you in that position. As a result, you stand up, come to the door and greet her like you were not doing anything interesting. You’d feel rude not talking to her when she walked in (and she may get reallllly angry) but you feel rude to God when you are interrupting. Is that being ashamed of Christ or is that being afraid/ashamed of that person or is that both? Is it a sin to be a bit secretive towards that person or not and was what you just did a couple minutes ago a sin or not?

Seems the larger issue is why do you keep a close friendship with someone who does not respect you?

They’re family and I love her so I can’t not keep a close friendship with her.

If this person is your parent, then, simply bear the suffering until you are emancipated.

If it is a sibling or other cousin, sit down and have a discussion about respect. My parents would have not tolerated that sort of disrespect between my siblings.

TAKE UP YOUR CROSS

It doesn’t seem to me that you’re sinning. I suspect it’s your mother, could be wrong. My question is why doesn’t she knock before coming into your room? Maybe everyone needs to be more respectful.
Go ahead and cross yourself, ignore how it looks to anyone else. It’s a sacramental.
I finally got where I can say a rosary in public (in a waiting room, like waiting for an appointment.) But I still try not to be obvious about it. It’s nobody else’s business.
