Luncheon Meat

I opened a can of SPAM and remembered it’s Lent and I have to fast. My last meal was a Burger at 2:10 A.M. last night, and I’m wondering if a small tin can of ground pork would constitute a full meal (I think it did during the 1940s).

You don’t have to fast during Lent. Fridays in the United States you can’t eat meat during Lent but the only fast days are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. I think if you choose the fast that is fine and I support that. I think if it’s already Saturday morning when you ate meat then you’re probably fine

REALLY!?
I was under the impression that it is mandatory for all Catholics to observe the Lenten Fast at least until Easter. Boy am I confused!:hypno:
No. Latin Rite Catholics are not required to fast all of Lent. In the United States, the only required days of fasting are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. In other countries, the guidelines vary, and there are broad exemptions due to age, state of life, or medical conditions.

There are some Eastern rites where traditional fasting and abstinence rules are more intense, but even there, the goal is not to punish you or catch you or trip you up. The goal is to grow in holiness by practicing small forms of penance.

You’re in luck since today is not a fast day, nor, being Saturday, a day of abstinence. Tho for me, eating Spam would be a penance. I used to like it, but now? Yech.

The Church once did enforce fasting throughout Lent, but fortunately for you, the current rules do not require it.

Um…how long have you been Catholic?

Maybe you’re thinking of Ramadan. 😃

How have you eaten it? I only ask because my mother always sliced it, breaded and fried it and it was pretty good. I only recently found out that many people have never had it that way. I had thought my mother’s way was the norm.🙂

It’s been so long I don’t remember, but now I can’t get past the smell. Just one of those things. 🙂

Me thinks the question has been answered.
But i ask can Spam really be qualified as meat?😃
Unless fasting is a normal part of your spiritual life, for your health’s sake i would not suggest jumping into a 40 day fast. Btw it has been suggested by health experts that an adult human needs 6 hrs uninterrupted sleep to be fully functional all day.

You can’t eat meat during Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent. Other times, you can eat meat.

I wonder the same about those little cans of devilled meats & those tiny hot dogs. They’re pretty much the same thing. Did you know how Spam got it’s name? They had a contest & the winner was Spam - SPiced hAM. 🙂

Correct.

There are some questions that continually plague man over time. Questions like ‘Is there intelligent life beyond Earth?’ And ‘What is the meaning of the SPAM® brand name?’ Unfortunately, we can provide answers to neither. The significance of the SPAM® brand name has long been a subject of speculation. One popular belief says it’s derived from the words ‘spiced ham.’ The real answer is known by only a small circle of former Hormel Foods executives. And probably Nostradamus.
Now I wonder where I got the story about the contest - I read it many years ago. Urban legends were pretty common back then, too! When humans don’t know the answer to something, we just make up our own alternative facts. 😃
