That hasn’t been my experience. I find that they focus more on sins against charity, and have the attitude that lust is natural and there’s not much you can do about it.I can confess drop kicking small puppies and looking at a woman lustfully and the advice will almost always focus on how to defeat lust.
That sounds about right to me. At least for the under 50 crowd.Lust tops men’s sin list, anger and pride for women, says papal theologian
Sexual sins are not the most serious and grievous sins that there are. It is just that of the grievous sins, they are the most common grave sins that we commit. Most people aren’t going around committing murder on a regular basis, but they can commit sexual sins on a regular basis. The reason we obsess about them tends to be out of the spiritual pride that tells ourselves that we should ultimately be above committing grave sins.I think that this just proves other sins are not focused on the way lust is.
- other sins can be rationalized as only being venially sinful while lust is always a grave matter.
- we’re taught to see sexual sins as the most serious and grievous kind of sin that can possibly be committed.
The priest will ultimately focus on the sin that you’re most habitually falling into or of which he is identifying a seemingly reluctance to completely admit the wrongness of your sin. As such, a random terrible one time horribly graveful sin probably isn’t a sin he’s going to focus his time counciling you on. Its unlikely you’re going to commit it again or that you’re struggling against it, and if he does focus too heavily on it, you may find it too humiliating to bear and may find it harder to come to confession the next time. He’s there to offer mercy and to help you persevere in the battle to hand more and more of your heart to Christ.I’ve noticed that the priest also typically focuses on lustful sins and not the sins that I find much more heinous. I can confess drop kicking small puppies and looking at a woman lustfully and the advice will almost always focus on how to defeat lust.

I actually was at a talk about this sort of thing. The priest gave a hypothetical about a penitent confessing a bunch of sins that includes masturbation. At the end the priest asks, “So, what should we talk about?”. The penitent predictably responds, “The masturbation”, to which the priest responds, “Sure. But first this situation with your aunt sounds like it’s bordering on murder…”I can confess drop kicking small puppies and looking at a woman lustfully and the advice will almost always focus on how to defeat lust.
