Hey guys, I am 15YO and I think this girl at school is pretty, and today I saw her back side for a fleeting second. I glanced but only for a second, and then I went over to talk with a friend. When I was done, I looked over to where she had been standing. I just glanced to see if she was there, but she wasn’t. I don’t know if this was natural and if I would’ve seen her back side again, I would’ve looked away in fear of lust. But because I had the intention of looking a second time, is what I have done lust, or just attraction?

Here’s a link that might help?

I think lust in general is when you see the person for ONLY their body. Attraction is more admiring how beautiful a person is and wanting to talk to/get to know them.
Then again, I’m not an expert so I’m not really sure about this-dont take my word for it.

If you struggle with lust-
One thing I know that works (to fight lust) is to look at the person and realize that they are Christ’s sister or brother. Also, saying a Hail Mary, praying the Rosary or asking the Virgin Mary to help you fight lust.

I think it was curiosity, then attraction which thankfully stopped there. Be at peace and learn to take custody of your eyes. It is not easy but God will help you.

Thanks guys… I don’t know, it’s just so hard out there in the world. Stuff is everywhere. I’ve been trying my best and have overcome some things, like thoughts and other things. But I still struggle with the real world situations like this one. I will probably confess this anyway, just to make sure. But at least right now, I can live with myself.

Talk to your priest about scruples and stop asking these questions here. We cannot help.

Sorry, I can’t go to church or confession as often as I would like since I can’t drive yet.

That was rude and uncalled for. He is 15 years old and is welcome to post here. This was not scrupulosity it was legitimate concern.

“Is it a sin” questions, especially those that aren’t obvious, point to scruples. We cannot tell him what is and is not a sin. That is the job of a trained priest. Not us.

We still can’t help you.

You don’t need to apologize. We just only want what’s best for you.

Nah, I guess I just wanted answers quicker than I could get them.

Here is a rule of human psychology: You can’t make yourself not think something. The famous example is the command: Don’t think of elephants. Well, of course that is not possible. Instead, you give yourself an instruction that is incompatible with thinking about elephants, such as “Think about predators.”

This is why St. Paul wrote: Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me. Then the God of peace will be with you. Phil. 4:8-9

If you find someone is attractive in the “thing of beauty” sense, that is OK, but turn your mind also to think of her as a person you want to get to heaven, that you want to have a happy life with or without you, as a daughter of the Lord and so on. Keep her in mind as a whole person who would of course want you to see her as a whole person. Put yourself in her place, and you’ll see what I mean. Let’s say you were wealthy. You’d want her to see you as a person, someone she would love and honor if she were your wife, even if you lost all your wealth and had only yourself to offer. Do you see what I mean? If she only looked at you as a source of money, that would be lust and disrespectful to you as a child of God.

If you look at women in that way, I don’t think you’ll have to worry about lust. Lust is when you make a person into an object, and the best remedy for that is to always turn your thoughts to the person as a person, which is to say as the beloved of God and someone with a soul for whom Our Lord thirsts. You won’t go wrong with that, whether you marry or not. So long as you put thoughts of the person ahead of anything they have to offer to you, you won’t have to punish yourself for noticing that someone else has something that you might covet or lust over if you weren’t in the habit of thinking of things from their point of view and the divine point of view.

Lust is a disordered attraction. It’s where sexual attraction becomes excessive and one begins to see a person just in a sexual way.

What you experienced is natural, but you need to begin to master yourself and reign in the desire to look again, or else it will indeed turn to lust. It comes from our wounded nature. Keep your eyes on her face if you’re going to look at her. Don’t dwell on looking at her body parts that incite that kind of feeling in you.

Practice what is called “custody of the eyes”. And think of her as a “daughter of God.”, worthy of the greatest respect.

The answer is that God loves you. Trust in his mercy. You’re a 15 yr old male, he knows the temptations you face. If you fall, ask for forgiveness and try again. I’ll be praying for you.
