my father is recently widowed and he has met a very nice lady. He has been interested in getting closer to her but a catholic priest during confession told him that it was a mortal sin of lust. To me this seems a little extreme. He is 92 years and can’t even perform sex.

Hi there,

Do you know what he means by “getting closer?”

Without knowing more – and keeping in mind that this is in the context of Confession, so we have absolutely no right to know the specifics – it is difficult to say what the priest meant, whether he was right or wrong, or whether he was being extreme. If your father is simply interested in pursuing a lady friend, there’s no reason to think that would be a mortal sin of lust. But then if he wasn’t conscious of sinful behavior, why did he bring it up in Confession in the first place? Clearly, the priest was responding to something he said.

I do not think it is sin for your father at the age of 92,to have a platonic friendship.
