Is it sinful to have lustful thoughts of one’s own wife? (Please, no lame jokes about it being miraculous)
Ooo that’s a good one!Is it sinful to have lustful thoughts of one’s own wife? (Please, no lame jokes about it being miraculous)
Love wants to give, Lust wants to take.Is it sinful to have lustful thoughts of one’s own wife? (Please, no lame jokes about it being miraculous)
I know what you mean. Yes, the lines are grey with regard to thoughts. But there are some general principles…Thoughts, feelings, emotions, on the other hand, are much more troublesome. Is a stray thought of adultery, for example, the same as committing adultery? The mind is far more difficult to control than the body. Would you therefore find it morally acceptable if, as a technique of mental control, one confined one’s lustful thoughts to one’s wife? Or failing that (assuming one had a powerful enough imagination), to a woman or women completely made up and who have no existence outside the mind of the one imagining them?
Umm. Yes yes. Amen to that!Love wants to give, Lust wants to take.
I strongly disagree with your assertion that married sex is “essentially (EVEN at the physical level) each party using the other for gratification”. The primary function of sex is reproduction: God’s decree was “increase and multiply, and fill the earth” (Gen. 1:28). He did not say, “Go forth and selfishly tingle your nerves at the expense of the other person, and by the way, you’d better be ready for a baby, too, or else!”As I think about this, I am more and more leaning towards the view the the Church has a real difficulty with sex of any kind, in or out of marriage. Since even basic, missionary position sex between husband and wife, without contraception and open to conception is essentially (at least at the physical level) each party using the other for gratification, surely even that objectifies the other person? Why, then, is it considered moral at all? Does the Church have a problem with the act of sex in and of itself?

Catechism of the Catholic Church 2362 "The acts in marriage by which the intimate and chaste union of the spouses takes place are noble and honorable; the truly human performance of these acts fosters the self-giving they signify and enriches the spouses in joy and gratitude."Sexuality is a source of joy and pleasure:
Do you mean lust or sexual pleasure/attraction? Sexual pleasure and attraction are natural components of the marital act. It’s instinctive. God placed it there to accompany sex. They are not wrong in themselves. There is nothing wrong if the spouses experience them IN RELATION to their sexual act.The Creator himself . . . established that in the [generative] function, spouses should experience pleasure and enjoyment of body and spirit. Therefore, the spouses do nothing evil in seeking this pleasure and enjoyment. They accept what the Creator has intended for them. At the same time, spouses should know how to keep themselves within the limits of just moderation.
Lust is defined in the catechism as disordered. Sexually desiring one’s wife is not disordered. It is the design of God.It depends on what one means by “lust”.
I should have been clearer in my earlier post. But the term lust as used by the church is different from the meaning of “sexual desire” or “arousal”. So the problem is only a misunderstanding around the use of the term.Forgive me if I sound snotty. Like many who have been away from the Church, I always assumed I come back; when I did, I found it much harder than I remember to uphold its precepts. Lust (or desire, if you prefer) is a natural function; it forms part of the whole process of sex. I’m simply having great difficulty separating sex (within marriage) from lust. It’s a bit like running a car without petrol; possibly you can do it on batteries, and its certainly more responsible and eco-friendly, but you simply cannot get the same performance. Sorry if this all sounds a little juvenile, but it’s a problem, and I am trying to address it. A “pure” physical relationship, so to speak, is, I suppose, a great ideal, but a physical relationship is still sex, pure or not. How do you take the lust out of it?
Well if your going to lust after a woman then the woman you are married to is the best choice.
