Luther not a Heretic

I read that the Pope will put out in Sept a document, thats says among other things, that Martin Luther was not a heretic. He was simply trying to end corruption in the Church. Comments?

How would this be awesome? I for one would be in extreme disappointment if the Pope made such a statement and would have to reconsider whether the Catholic Church had the entire truth.

Luther was a heretic. Period. He severed himself openly from the Church.

While I’m no expert on this, I think Luther saw there was corruption in the Church and challenged Church authority on it and thus suffered the consequences of excommunication.

I don’t think Luther ever envisioned or wanted the Reformation split that happened.

Yes, but the TRUE Church itself was/is/will be perfect because of what she teaches. Luther by virtue of what he did in openly tossing out 1500 years of Christianity severed himself from the Church. He openly called the Pope the Anti-Christ and was severely anti-Semitic. How anyone can say that Luther wasn’t a heretic, even the Pope of Rome, is beyond me.

Should the Pope much such a pronouncement, I’ll have to take Orthodoxy into such great consideration. Because the Pope would be speaking speaking infallibly on the subject for many reasons. If Luther wasn’t a heretic, then ultimately the Pope would be saying what he did was right, and what he taught was right, would he not?

Keep in mind, the Church was also anti-Semitic. Lots of Jews died at the hands of the Church. The Church was not perfect in actions on numerous levels. Not saying everything Luther did was right or even proper, but he sincerely felt the Church had veered from it’s proper path.

Anyway, we’ll see how this plays out.

Who are we going to attack now when folks start up about the pope?
 
Isn’t it true that Lutherans don’t even believe much of what luther himself taught and believed, such as devotion to Mary, the immaculate conception etc…?

How many times have I been told that while the Catholic Church is perfect in its teachings it is not always perfect when it comes to decisions made by men? So wouldn’t this fall into that category?

I don’t know why people are getting so excited over this. You should be glad that maybe, just maybe, one of your brothers (though long dead) is being recognized for what he intended not for ticking people off. From what I have read on here and other areas Luther hit some pride buttons and therefore was banished. Maybe the Pope has decided to look at where he was coming from rather than what it was perceived as. 😊

Shouldn’t you be glad that he might be made right in the Church’s eyes? Why would it shake some of your Faith’s just because one man is being recognized as a member of your Church??? Such hatred for someone you’ve never met… sheesh…

Please. Luther did not toss out 1500 years of history. He tried to bring the light that you can’t purchase heaven. He wanted the CHurch to come back to Christ, not man’s efforts. I am astounded at how many RC’s say such things, yet they have never bothered to read what Luther had to say. Check out his catechism and you will see that Luther was still very Catholic. I guess if you consider him a heretic then all of us Protestants are. Would you agree with that.

Luther could not stand Henry VIII. He even said so himself. Henry abused the ideas of reform, and Luther was disgusted by other monarchs who did the same. Get your “facts” straight. If Protestants are in the mold of Luther, why do you not consider us heretics?

Have you read what Luther did and said?

Paying for indulgences was only one part with the business partner Cranach and the cartoon depictions of monsters and the Apocalypse.

Luther tried to change the wording in the bible and the predicted the end of the Pope as the great Satan and the Catholic Church.The Apocalypse did not occur so much for Luther and his heresies.
Christ’s Church still stands and Lutherans continue to divide and split apart not only in their teachings but in their churches.

For Martin Luther the real test has already been met when he had to explain his actions and attempted destruction of Christ’s Church to Jesus.

You never answered my last question. And that is mighty nice of you to condemn someone else. That’s just what Jesus did, wasn’t it? Well, that may not matter since the pope says otherwise.

First I never condemned anyone what I said was Martin Luther has met his judgement. Read what I said please and do not add anything to it.

What that judgement was I do not know.

For all I know Martin Luther could have recanted with his last breath.

The Pope never said otherwise that was already discussed and proven false on this forum.

And for your question I cannot answer it when I do not know whom us is. whom is us?
