Here also is an interesting quotation from that hero of the counter-reformation Cardinal Cajetan:

Where do we read of Cajetan’s censure by Rome for holding the same view as the Reformers on the OT Canon?

Nowhere.

Why?

Because at the time he wrote this, he was allowed to have the opinion.
Do you have a link to the Cardinal’s complete writing on this subject instead of this mere exerpt from it? I would like to read in it’s entirety what he wrote so I can see in context exactly what he was saying.
Also, the Vatican does not sit there and censure every opinion expressed by every dissident theologan, only the ones that start to cause significant confusion with the faithful. If they did, they wouldn’t be able to do anything else.

Judge the data on its own merits.

One might just as easily say exactly the same sorts of things about Armstrong, Madrid and Akin. What good does it do to dismiss the testimony because you don’t like the testator?

I try to judge every argument on its own merits. After all, its only fair.
I hear ya, but you cannot separate the message from the source. Paul even tells Timothy to hold fast to what he learned because he knows WHO HE LEARNED IT FROM - ie, what kind of people they are - not from the merits of the arguments they might offer.

Um, if you think Cajetan was a “dissident” you need to read the Catholic Encyclopedia article on him I linked to.

He was, in fact, *Papabile.

*If you’re just going to dismiss the source because I won’t publish the whole book here for you I am not sure what to say except that the game goes both ways. I haven’t asked for any documentary evidence but you would offer me death by a thousand qualifications.

If the fact that a Catholic apologist accepts the work as authentic as quoted isn’t compelling enough for you, I don’t think anything I could say would be.

It’s not going to make any difference anyway. In a few days someone else will come along to repeat the slander that no one ever questioned the canon until Luther came along and “threw books out of the Bible”.

James Swan? The anti-Catholic apologist? Hardly someone I want to get information on Luther from when he doesn’t get Catholicism right! Has anyone see the debates on Luther between James Swan and Dave Armstrong?
Since we’re in verification mode:

Do you have any examples of Swan being deceptive or erroneous?

Maybe you should ask David Armstrong or Art Sippo that question.

Art seems to think so when he says:

James’ Swan Song
“The Protestant apologist James Swan has now started a new line on his blog where he quotes me out of context. This is par for the course with ol’ Jim whose idea of a “Catholic theologian” was the late Fr. Josef Lortz, a card carrying Nazi who reinterpreted European history through Hitler’s eyes and agreed with Uncle Adolph that Martin Luther was a great German (i.e., Anti-Semitic) hero right up there with Himmler, Eichmann, and Heydrich”

Hmmm…Swan quoted the Roman Catholic historian Joseph Lortz? Amazing. Why would he do that? He can’t really believe all that clap trap about how important Lortz’s studies have been to the Catholic understanding of Luther. That Swan guy is too much! Everyone knows that Lortz was a Nazi, and all the praise for his work by both serious Catholic and Protestant scholars is pure lies and deception. Again, Swan can’t be trusted. Never read his Luther research.

I’m not seeing any real examples, just value judgements
Well, you’re a “moderate Catholic”. I’m sure you are capable of finding the errors throughout his blog. I gave you the biggest example I could.

Holding to sola scriptura, for one, is erroneous… In fact, it’s SO erroneous, I need not go further.

As a *Catholic *of any kind, moderate or not, how is it that you are able to back someone who is so clearly NOT in line with Church teaching? It seems you are on the fence here.

Be a Catholic or don’t, but don’t be moderate. That’s like “lukewarm”. Make a decision and defend it, but don’t say you’re Catholic and then attempt to get Catholics all riled up by trying to get us to read the works of a guy who is clearly NOT accepting of our faith. We have plenty of other resources on Luther by people who are Catholic.

Rev 3:16
So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.

For the umpteen millionth time:

LUTHER DID NOT “REJECT” THE EPISTLE OF JAMES.

🙂

Early in in public life he said some things about it which has led many to conclude that, at that time, he did not consider it as important as, say, the Epistle of Paul to the Romans. Sometimes the way he chose to say this was rather more forceful than we would like.

Later in life, however, he revised this view and said some very charitable things about it although it does seem clear that his conviction that the doctrine of Sola Fide clearly articulated gives a given book of the Bible more importance caused him to continue to hold James in a secondary position.

If you look at the table of contents of any edition of his translation of the Bible, you will see that he translated and included James as fully canonical.

IOW - he had a canon within the canon: that is, he considered that some books of the Bible were more theologically central than others.

Which is very different from not regarding a book as canonical at all. If people would avoid quoting only part of his “epistle of straw” remark, & would quote the whole remark, there would be one myth less to discuss 🙂 :

"Saint John’s gospel and St. Paul’s epistles, especially that to the Romans, and St. Peter’s first epistle are the true pit and marrow of all the books. They should justly be the first books, and every Christian should be advised to read them first and most, and by daily reading to make them as familiar to himself as his daily bread.
In them you do not find described many works and miracles of Christ; but you do find depicted in a masterly manner how faith in Christ overcomes sin, death, and hell, and gives life, righteousness, and salvation. This is the real nature of the Gospel …

These books show you Christ and teach you all that is necessary and salutary for you to known even though you were never to see or hear any other book or doctrine. Therefore St. James’ epistle is really an epistle of straw compared to them, for it lacks this evangelical character."

[my emphasis]

He does not say the letter is an epistle of straw - he says it is “really an epistle of straw compared to” other NT writings; & gives his reason. For more on this issue, including Luther’s quotations from James, go to: gbgm-umc.org/umw/James/Background/originaltexts.htm#luther

It is surely not wrong to regard some books as more central to the theological meaning of the Bible than others - Nahum is as canonical as St.John’s Gospel, but that does not mean that it reveals Christ as clearly. ##

I visited that silly blog, and the errors jumped off the page. The guy is so out there. Specifics don’t need to be given when it’s so obvious everything there is fueled by error. Especially the Luther material. For instance, he wrote this totally error filled article on Luther calling James an epistle of straw.

Even worse, he tries to use quotes from the early church fathers saying they held to the teaching on the primacy, sufficiency and ultimate authority of Scripture.

Agreed. It’s like telling Catholics to read Jack Chick or Dave Hunt.

I think it would be helpful to list those resources by Roman Catholics on Luther. That sneaky guy Swan always recommends Catholic scholars that have written on Luther, but they are probably lukewarm Catholics, not *full-fledged *Catholics. To my knowledge, none of the current batch of Catholic apologists has written a full length work on Luther (Madrid, Hahn, Sungenis, etc.), but take heart! Father Patrick O’Hare wrote an entire book exposing Luther’s lies in the early 1900’s. It’s called, The Facts About Luther.

Yeah, that Swan guy is probably a Nazi sympathizer as well. Can’t trust those guys. Sippo is right, refutation by Ad Hom is quicker and less work any way.

Was’nt the Pope a Nazi for a while?

Being from Deutschland, does’nt that make him a German Shepherd? Or maybe the Top Dog?
😃

I don’t think Pope Benedict XVI had much of a choice at the time. I’m positive he wasn’t on the same side theoretically with Hitler.

Ratzinger was a member of Hitler Jugend, Hitler’s “boyscouts”, just like any other German kid at that time. Hitler Jugend was not something you could choose… it was not voluntary at all and dosesn’t proove any extraordinary support for Hitler.

Besides… How old could Ratzinger have been at the time?

Actually it was a voluntary organization though of course no one knew at the time what Hitler, Himmler et al were doing to the Jews and Slavs and all the other people they were trying to subjugate or wipe out.
