First, thank you.
What you say is true, but I hope folks will give me a little room to wiggle out when I foot-in-mouth, so I try to do the same.

I hope that isn’t because they couldn’t if they wanted to. :bighanky: 😃

Jon
Oh for goodness sake stop crying. 😛

p.s. That wasn’t just a foot in mouth comment (about being lazy) that was a foot in your *** comment.

Hey, JonNC…how’s life?

Please allow me to nit-pick…just a bit. As I hang around this place I have come to the realization that there exists here this popular notion of the existence of extreme unity prior to 1054. I would suggest that such was not the case. For example Donatist churches existed alongside non-Donatist churches for a couple hundred years…separate b/c of their attitude with respect to the lapsed (and related matters). Same could be said for the Novatian churches. Two other splits would involve the Nestorians and the Pelagians (not to mention the Arians). I would also suggest that until the Roman bishop acquired the political power to enforce its spiritual claims it was unable to achieve (in the west) this extreme unity that is assumed to have always existed. Not surprisingly this extreme unity lasted roughly from the time that the bishop of Rome (together with its eastern counterparts) acquired the political power to create it and then until the bishop of Rome lost the political power to maintain it…least that is MHO.
**2 Corinthians 11 But what I am doing I will continue to do, so that I may cut off opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the matter about which they are boasting. For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds…

1 John 4 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Matthew 7 “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves.”

Matthew 15 "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man. "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders. "These are the things which defile the man;

Galatians 2 But {it was} because of the false brethren secretly brought in, who had sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, in order to bring us into bondage. But we did not yield in subjection to them for even an hour, so that the truth of the gospel would remain with you.

Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the false circumcision;

2 Peter 2:1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.
Why do Catholics say they listen to Peter?

Anyway; as Solomon said “nothing new under the sun”; the “disunity” was started before Jesus hung on the cross; one of the ten commandments was; thou shall not bear false witness; against a neighbor is bad enough, but I pity the people that bear it against the Trinity. The true unity will and is wrought in heaven…Amen!**

Thank you for your opinion.

But honestly, your approach is such a turn-off. I would never try to spread faith with the method you use. Its putrid.
I guess you prefer the sugar-coat and someone to do the work for you? If the truth turns you off; then you MAY be part of the many, who are merrily on the way to hell IMO.

Tanner, Please tell me how we can have SS with out a bible…

The first Christian did not have a complete and the Bible it self we tell the Church is the Pillar of Truth and NOT the Bible.
**
It is “pillar and support” of the truth, which is what? Roman tradition? The church is the collective individuals spiritually gifted by the Holy Spirit to “support” the truth of the gospel message.

Bill, do you believe Paul is speaking of the Roman Catholic Church? **

Tanner I hate to tell you but you are WRONG Sola Scriptura, the doctrine of SS is NOT taught anywhere in the Bible,The doctrine of Af SS had its souurce in Luther own emotional problems, sorry but you lose this one
**Perhaps you would believe Irenaeus "“We have learned from none others the plan of our salvation, than from those through whom the gospel has come down to us, which they did at one time proclaim in public, and, at a later period, by the will of God, handed down to us in the Scriptures, to be the ground and pillar of our faith.” [1]

Alexander Roberts and James Donaldson, editors, Ante-Nicene Fathers (Peabody: Hendriksen, 1995) Vol. 1, Irenaeus, “Against Heresies” 3.1.1, p. 414.

Tradition, when referring to oral proclamation such as preaching or teaching, was viewed primarily as the oral presentation of Scriptural truth, or the codifying of biblical truth into creedal expression. There is no appeal in the writings of Irenaeus or Tertullian to a Tradition on issues of doctrine that are not found in Scripture.

Irenaeus and Tertullian state emphatically that all the teachings of the Bishops that was given orally was rooted in Scripture and could be proven from the written Scriptures.

The Early Church Fathers (Ignatius, Polycarp, Clement, the Didache, and Barnabus) taught doctrine and defended Christianity against heresies. In doing this, their sole appeal for authority was Scripture. Their writings literally breathe with the spirit of the Old and New Testaments. In the writings of the apologists such as Justin martyr and Athenagoras the same thing is found. There is no appeal in any of these writings, to the authority of Tradition as a separate and independent body of revelation.

It was Irenaeus who stated that while the Apostles at first preached orally, their teaching was later committed to writing (the Scriptures), and the Scriptures had since that day become the pillar and ground of the Churchs faith. His exact statement is as follows:
Code:
"We have learned from none others the plan of our salvation, than from those through whom the gospel has come down to us, which they did at one time proclaim in public, and, at a later period, by the will of God, handed down to us in the Scriptures, to be the ground and pillar of our faith." [1]
Heiko Oberman comments about the relationship between Scripture and Tradition in the Early Church:
Code:
"Scripture and tradition were for the Early Church in no sense mutually exclusive: kerygma (the message of the gospel), Scripture and Tradition coincided entirely. The Church preached the kerygma, which is found in toto in written form in the canonical books. The tradition was not understood as an addition to the kerygma contained in Scripture but as handing down that same kerygma in living form: in other words everything was to be found in Scripture and at the same time everything was in living Tradition". [4]
Funny how the ECF’s words are taken out of context so many times; this should be no surprise to the enlightened mind, the divinely enlightened; the mind of Christ.

The Church has a hierarchy as we see in the NT (bishops are overseers) and through the bishops who were apostles and disciples of Jesus we have apostolic succession. It is to these people that authority to interpret the scripture was given, because they were told how to interpret the “Word of God” by Jesus himself (this is Sacred Tradition of which you refuse to believe in), that is why Jesus says to the apostles, paraphrasing here, “whoever listens to you listens to me”.

p.s. Paul was speaking of the “One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic” church, i.e., the Catholic Church.

Justification by faith, sacramental union, the priesthood is universal, there is no visible Church, and sola scripture are all false doctrines.
**As expected; words without any substance.

I’ll give you a heads up on justification. First justification and salvation are one in the same; justifcation is the positive of the new life in Christ and Salvation is the negative of the new life in Christ. Two sides of he same coin.

Justification is God declaring a person righteous before Himself; thus escaping the penalty of sin, which is death and separation from God. Salvation is the negative, where the believer is saved from something, which is the penalty of sin, which is death and separation from God. What is the means of this justification or salvation; is it not having faith in Jesus; or believing in the person and work of Christ, which we can only do by faith alone, since we were not there as witnesses.

Now let’s see if the Bible has anything to say about how we are justified before God. Take out a pen and paper and write some versus down for later reference.

Romans 4 “the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith”…"For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants…"Now not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, {He} who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.

Romans 5 “The gift is not like {that which came} through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment {arose} from one {transgression} resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift {arose} from many transgressions resulting in justification.”

Romans 5 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.

If you would spend the next 6 months, eery single day, doing an in-depth study of Romans; you would reach another conclusion about many things. Romans has been referred by many believers as the “Greatest Book Ever Written”; it is true IMO.

This is the tip of the iceberg; I’ll through a couple of more in for consideration.

“BUT THE RIGHTEOUS {man} SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.” cf Habakkuk 2:4, ro 3:21, 9:30, php 3:9, gal 3:11 & heb 10:38

Romans 3:24 being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

Justified = dikaioō
Righteous = dikaioō

Defined: to declare, pronounce, one to be just, righteous, or such as he ought to be

Please wake up; please I implore you; please Lord.**

Hey Bill,

That is a very interesting request you have made of Tanner. I hope that I am able to get back here for the answer.

Peace, Graubo
**Scripture consists of all special revelation from God, whether the written OT, oral teaching of the gospel, or by epistle; which were all put into a book, called the Bible.

The ECF considered tradition as “teaching” the gospel message within the confines of special revelation; not man made additions, which we see all over the place.**

No need for the attack. We as Catholics also believe that Scripture is 100% true.

I’d start another debate about the Authority of the Church + Scripture vs. Scripture Alone, but that’d be repeating about half of the topics on this board. An exaggeration, but you know what I mean.
Who said anything about Scripture Alone?

There is no appeal in the writings of Irenaeus or Tertullian to a Tradition on issues of doctrine that are not found in Scripture.
:hmmm:Hmmm…

Since Irenaeus was cited, I think what else he had to say may be worth noting.

"Matthew also issued a written Gospel among the Hebrews in their own dialect, while Peter and Paul were preaching at Rome, and laying the foundations of the Church. After their departure, Mark, the disciple and interpreter of Peter, did also hand down to us in writing what had been preached by Peter

We do put to confusion all those who assemble in unauthorized meetings;[we do this I say,] by indicating that tradition derived from the apostles, of the very great, the very ancient, and universally known Church founded and organized at Rome by the two glorious apostles, Peter and Paul . . . .The Blessed apostles, then, having founded and built up the Church, comitted into the hands of Linus the office of the episcopate. Of this Linus Paul makes mention in the Epistles to Timothy. To him succeeded Anacletus; and after him, in the third place of the Apostles, Clement . . . Against Heresies 3, 1, 1, in Ante-Nicene Fathers 1:414; and, 3,3,2-3 in ANF 1:415-16].

Hmmm. . . is any of that an appeal to the Scriptures? :hmmm:Tough call, I know. . .

Tertullian (also cited before) says:

"Moreover, if there be any [heresies] bold enough to plant themselves in the midst of the apostolic age, so that they might seem to be handed down by the Apostles because they were from the time of the Apostles, we say to them: let them unroll the order of their bishops, running down in succession from the beginning, so that the first bishop shall have for author and predecessor some on of the Apostles or of the apostolic men who continued steadfast with the Apostles. For this is the way in which the apostolic Churches transmit their lists: like the Church of the Smyrnaeans, which records that Polycarp was placed there by John; like the Church of the Romans where Clemeent was ordained by Peter. In this same way the other Churches display those whom they have as sprouts from the apostolic seed, having been established in the episcopate by the Apostles.

Make of it what you will, but it sounds like Apostolic Succession to me, without an appeal to the Scriptures . . . .:hmmm:

And Clement, of course, makes it known to the Corinthians in his Apostolic letter, that the Church at Rome has been trying to get word to them of the Roman Church’s ruling in the matter of several men, whom Clement describes as . . .“that shameful and detestable sedition” having usurped the rightfully ordained clergy in Corinth. He really lays in to them. This is at a time when John was still alive 240 miles to the North and, it is assumed, still in a position of authority over the Asian Churches. Why would the Corinthian Church, in 96 A.D., be waiting patiently for rulings from Clement and the Roman Church over 600 miles away when St. John was 1/3 of the distance away?

That question should get some interesting answers.
Funny how the ECF’s words are taken out of context so many times; this should be no surprise to the enlightened mind, the divinely enlightened; the mind of Christ.
I’m not surprised at all.

God is the one who gives the ability to see and articulate His truth as revealed in Scripture via the Spirit, which leads one to the correct understanding of Scripture. Before I was a Christian I would read God’s word and a few things I understood; but most I did not although I thought I did. I’ll give you an example because I see this error all the time.

1 Corinthians 2:12-16 " Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual {thoughts} with spiritual {words.} But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ."

1 John 2:27 “the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.” Who in the Trinity is John referring to? Meditate on the answer.

“1 Corinthians 2 :Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden {wisdom} which God predestined before the ages to our glory;…For to us God revealed {them} through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God…Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual {thoughts} with spiritual {words.} But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised…But we have the mind of Christ.”

John 14 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things,

John 15 “When the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, {that is} the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify about Me.”

John 16 "But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. “And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment…”

I do not want to overwhelm you because Scripture has a lot more to say about the work of the Holy Spirit, which is a believers resident Truth teacher. He uses diligent study of the Scripture to lead, such as the Bereans. He uses faithful pastors and teachers who hold firm to the Truth of Scripture. He uses books and a host of other methods to enlighten the believer, which increases their wisdom, understanding and love for the Trinity.

Do you believe this is what Scripture teaches here; that it is the work of the Holy Spirit is wrought to each individual, not the Magisterium? Do you see any difference between what you believe to be true and what Scripture say is true…do you believe God?**

JohnNC,

You are a credit to these fora, a gentleman and a scholar. We are all to blame for disunity. I think Luther was right about much, just as one today could dissent over things like Centering Prayer, Enneagram, Jungian Spirituality and the Sex Abuse scandals. I think that Luther got played, as did Calvin and Zwingli in order for the Nobility of Europe to wrench control of the Church’s Wealth (which was a buffer between the Nobility and the peasantry) and Religion (also a buffer) and to create their own State political religions.

Modern secular humanism is just one of the inevitabilities. What works, means what works for the rich—in this case, often wed to the idea of wealth as providence, which means it is God’s will for rich and powerful men to rule over poor and weak ones. This is the Gospel turned on its head.

But I digress . . .

I mostly wanted to acknowledge your valuable and sage contributions. I am proud to call you a brother in Christ, despite the Lutheran thing.😉

All my best . . .

You’ve just proven my point that the apostles and Jesus’s disciples were the one’s given the authority to interpret the Bible correctly (many of passages you quoted were directed to the apostles only). And I of course having the Holy Spirit must look to the church (Sacred Tradition) for truth and from there look at scripture to verify this truth (do you recall the Bereans who looked to scripture after Paul who had been taught by Peter had preached to them the teachings/interpretation of Christ only to find he was telling the truth). That is why Tanner the Church is the pillar and foundation of truth for her very foundation was built on men who were taught by Jesus and so passed down these teachings to each succeeding generation through apostolic succession. Furthermore many many people couldn’t read back then so they needed the help of the Church to teach and interpret scripture for them. And do you recall when Philip helped the confused Ethiopian to interpret what he was reading, this is the apostolic authority I was telling you of. God bless.

:hmmm:Hmmm…

** I would agree if were in accord to Scripture, but the rest clarifies that he was defending against those that made a claim to the apostolic message, which is the gospel, and he is unmasking them because they preach another gospel.**

Here is the part you intentionally left out:
“Let the heretics invent something like it. After their blasphemies, what could be unlawful for them? But even if they should contrive it, they will accomplish nothing; for their doctrine itself, when compared with that of the Apostles, will show by its own diversity and contrariety that it has for its author neither an Apostle nor an apostolic man. The Apostles would not have differed among themselves in teaching, nor would an apostolic man have taught contrary to the Apostles, unless those who were taught by the Apostles then preached otherwise.” _ I love this because he is saying a heretic is one who diverges from the teaching of the apostles, which is the NT & OT and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Do you know of a church or two that does the same???

And Clement, of course, makes it known to the Corinthians in his Apostolic letter, that the Church at Rome has been trying to get word to them of the Roman Church’s ruling in the matter of several men, whom Clement describes as . . .“that shameful and detestable sedition” having usurped the rightfully ordained clergy in Corinth. Why would the Corinthian Church, in 96 A.D., be waiting patiently for rulings from Clement and the Roman Church over 600 miles away when St. John was 1/3 of the distance away?
Clement: "After the death of the tyrant, the [Apostle John] came back again to Ephesus from the Island of Patmos; and, upon being invited, he went even to the neighboring cities of the pagans, here to appoint bishops, there to set in order whole Churches, and there to ordain to the clerical estate such as were designated by the Spirit (Who is the Rich Man that is Saved? 42:2 [inter 190-210 A.D.]). Clement knew who really ordains pastors.
That question should get some interesting answers.
I’m not surprised at all.
All my best . . .
**Citations please; I’m sure they are from internal sources within the Catholic Church…huummm. Never mind; it is probably accurate and you would not intentionally leave anything out or add to; that would not be very Catholic.

Also; show me from Scripture where Peter and Paul ever preached together; much less in Rome and nowhere was Peter ever found in Rome. Except in the mind of the Roman Catholic; which is not in Scripture either.

Irenaeus: “For if the Apostles had known hidden mysteries which they taught to the elite secretly and apart from the rest, they would have handed them down especially to those very ones to whom they were committing the self-same Churches. For surely they wished all those and their successors to be perfect and without reproach, to whom they handed on their authority (Against Heresies 3:3:1 [A.D. 180-199]).” - Irenaeus knew there was nothing to be added to God’s special revelation from the apostles, which is the Bible Protestants have today, but your Church makes the claim that Irenaeus called a heresy; extra revelation through tradition of the apostles, which was not taught by the Apostles.

Each man will have to determine if he will follow the teaching of Scripture, which is the teaching of the Apostles or follow another gospel; teaching and doctrines of men who claim they teach what the Apostles of Jesus taught; but in reality is false and another gospel.** Do you know Christ? More importantly, does Christ know you?

You’ve just proven my point that the apostles and Jesus’s disciples were the one’s given the authority to interpret the Bible correctly (many of passages you quoted were directed to the apostles only). **Actually, you have proven you don’t believe God and His promise to lead each individual to His special revelation via the Holy Spirit, which resides in true believers and not with an institution; particulary one that usurps the authority of the Trinity, IMO.

By the way; it is not “pillar and foundation” it is “pillar and support” completely two different Greek words with 2 different meanings used in the NT. How would you know that; you are too lazy, IMO, to read and study the word of God for yourself; therefore you depend on someone else to do your work for you, which almost always leads to error and often another gospel as you have demonstrated IMO. Without the Holy Spirit leading you personally; you cannot understand the Word of God…do you believe that is true or not?

In I Timothy 2:4, Paul said, “God, our Savior,” now pay attention, “who will have all men to be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth.” You can’t come to the knowledge of the truth until salvation. And real Christians have the indwelling truth teacher, the supernatural Holy Spirit.

John 7 “The Jews marveled saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?” IOW; How does He know anything when He hasn’t been to our schools. “Jesus answered them and said, My doctrine is not Mine but His that sent Me, and if any man will do His will he shall know of the doctrine whether it be of God or whether I speak of Myself.” IOW Jesus said ‑ I got it straight from God.**

Well if your opinions were authoritative and therefore valid I would give a **** but it isn’t so I don’t. 😃

Tanner,

You proved my point, which is that it is fine for you to cite the ECF’s if they appear in any way to support your doctrines, but when they defy your statements you read into them what is not there. To wit:
Here is the part you intentionally left out:
"Let the heretics invent something like it
. After their blasphemies, what could be unlawful for them? But even if they should contrive it, they will accomplish nothing; for their doctrine itself, when compared with that of the Apostles, will show by its own diversity and contrariety that it has for its author neither an Apostle nor an apostolic man. The Apostles would not have differed among themselves in teaching, nor would an apostolic man have taught contrary to the Apostles, unless those who were taught by the Apostles then preached otherwise." _ I love this because he is saying a heretic is one who diverges from the teaching of the apostles, which is the NT & OT and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Do you know of a church or two that does the same???
No where in the quote does he state anything about Scriptures. You want evidence? Look again at the citation you provided. Note the absence of “scriptures”, “writings” or even, “memoirs.” He is contrasting the Apostles doctrine with that of heretics, certainly not the Scriptures and heretical Scriptures. If he means this, it is no where clear in this citation. Read into it as you wish, just don’t expect anyone to be taken in by such “reasoning.”

First, you stated that the ECF’s taught nothing about doctrine without appealing to Scripture. I refuted this theory by providing citations from the very fathers you listed showing that they were not referring to the scriptures in appealing to Apostolic tradition.
Citations please
I Clement 1, ANF, 1:5. You can find it online at www.earlychristianwritings.com too.
Also; show me from Scripture where Peter and Paul ever preached together; much less in Rome and nowhere was Peter ever found in Rome. Except in the mind of the Roman Catholic; which is not in Scripture either.
So you cite the ECF’s when it supports you (or when you think it does) but when they have a contrary opinion to you it is: “where is that in the Scriptures?”

I rest my case . . .

All my best . . .
