Let me put this in words you understand, I don’t care what you think of me Yankee, how shocking is that? Furthermore, I don’t like it when things are inaccurately portrayed.
I’m trying to stop laughing … like @#@!$#$% ahhh.

Inaccurately portrayed. Let’s see, church kills guy because he tries to translate book. Pretty much sums it up … please explain the “inaccurate portrayal”?

formerly, protestant … but in practice, not really (although I did go through a phase in high school … and I did have an aunt who was the family super-Episcopalian. What a drag she was, you know the one everyone avoided at family picnics ).
I feel sorry for your aunt (for having a family who didn’t appreciate her) and may God bless her for her witness.

Good night and God bless Yankee.

she’s dead … but we still loved the old lady (it’s just that she had a habit of spewing the dogma at weird times, you know like during a picnic when we were more concerned with the cooking the perfect steak or our volleyball game, or whose driving to get more beer).

Sounded like you were disrespecting her?

What about your mom? 😃
she would tell my dad, who would figuratively slap me upside the head (you know, say he was gonna, then ground me or cut my allowance … the horrors of white suburban American life :D:D:D).

You can try and belittle my distrust of your church all you want, but think about it … if I were saying these same things in the 11th or 12th century, your church would have burned me alive (can you imagine your flesh being burned to death, can there be a greater form of horror and tyranny). That fact people still think such an institution is infallible, is just beyond me. You might not think so … but believe me, I bite my tongue and censor my comments quite often in these dialogs.

Sounds like my family (although my father would figuratively use the belt :D). And I can’t tell you how many times I escaped getting figuratively hit by hiding!!! :D:D

Yankee, you have no idea what I’d really like to say to you sometimes?

Just remember who gets the last laugh? 😃

you kidding me, if I ever disrespected an elder my dad would slap upside the head (well, not literally, but “figuratively”:D:D:D)

Has any of this anything to do with Luther?

not sure really at this point. I would say dialog (I might have thought there could be understanding when I first came here, but I’m now fairly convinced there can’t be).

The question, how should I treat an adversary? How does anyone treat an adversary? Adversarial right … 🙂

When you debate someone do you pretend you’re not debating and don’t disagree? If it concerns deeply held beliefs, any strong objection (no matter how delicately put) will be offensive (and will usually incite an aggressive response). That’s the nature of debate.
Perhaps that is how you debate, not all use that technique. There are many ways to disagree amiably, if one wishes to. Even between believers and non-believers. “I apologize…” can be powerful words when used to correct a heavy handed or misunderstood post, even without recanting a single point of a position.

Christ taught us how to deal with our “Adversaries” though I must admit it is difficult sometimes. Christ told us to:
27 "But I say to you who hear: **Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, **28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. 32 "But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. 35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.
I know that you will likely ask if this is how the Church acted in it’s history and I will respond No. Those who acted in the name of the Church sinned and sinned horribly. Does the sin of an individual, even many individuals negate the validity of a teaching? No it does not, and it is teachings that interest me.

I have a movie in with lines that say:
“People go to London and find just what they are looking for”.
“I’d go looking for the London of English Liturature”.
“Then it’s there”.

It appears, that in you rstudy of history you went looking for negatives and found them, for they are there. Of course you miss much of the positives that way.

Peace
James

Well there was no one but me and Yankee anyways, so there’s no harm done. God bless.
scuse me - good ol JRKH is here from time to time.
Also - it gets annoying for those people who might be joining a thread late, or just lurking to have to wade through a bunch of off topic posts to get to things that are relevant. It’s a pain in the backside.

That being said, I am glad to see your posts with yank getting more civil. 👍

Peace
James

(Hey James, good to see you again, sssshhh, writing small so I wont be noticed derailing my own thread - dont say anything, and noone will notice 👍)

I didn’t realize my posts were uncivil (I’m passionate about what I believe in but not hurtful)? Anyways, this thread was being yanked (pun intended) off course before I came along. God bless.

=yankee_doodle;5674855]I’m not sure there can be civil dialog between Christians and non-theists (or non-Christians, or maybe even between Catholics and Protestants). We’re inherently adversaries.
I’m sorry you feel that way.
maybe fair logic with regard to Lutherans (and other Protestants); but you guys don’t assert you’re an infallible institution either (and assert you’ve always been infallible because an illusory god prefers you over all others on earth).
Therefore, it’s perfectly logical to use history to debunk the Catholic claim of infallibility (and you notice they will always defend their history, no matter how stained with blood, because they understand the logical implications of saying their institution was wrong).
I think they defend as infallible the teaching of the Catholic Church, not the individual members, be they laity, priest, bishop, or pope (when not speaking ex cathedra). The CC itself recognizes this, even in their Catechism.
As for defending the worst moments of the CC, their are a few triumphalists who certainly will. But only a few.
I use what I believe is a more practical method of analysis. I look at the totality of action through time; and credibility.
I would be fearful of being unjust were I to use that standard against you.

Jon
