I have, I will admit, during more turbulent times, attending a couple of ELCA churches but I can definitely say the two ELCA churches I attend didn’t have pastors this liberal? I guess it’s South Carolina and we still respect Jesus. Unreal.

That’s not crazy talk. I know crazy talk. Crazy talk visits me every fortnight. I have a good friend who thinks Jesus was the result of and alien experiment, aliens abducted Mary (Archangel Gabriel was an alien), they impregnated her with alien sperm and Jesus was the result. He was given some other worldly powers due to his genetic makeup. The “aliens” told Mary and Joseph they would return one day and that they needed to make sure their son taught us (uncivilised inhabitants of earth) how to behave towards each other. 🤷

This is liberal Christianity to the extreme.
The ELCA has drifted in the opposite direction from our Confessions and the understanding that the Bible is the inspired word of God. It’s sad to see this happening…

Not all the ELCA churches. I know of one in particular that is proud to preach Christ crucified, risen and coming again. Great group of Christians.

Is your friend’s name Giorgio ?

Sounds more like a feminist view of Jesus. “Oh he can’t just be a man! That’s sexist and God doesn’t have a sex!”😃

Oh, exactly. This isn’t a theological view. It isn’t scriptural, nor is it confessional in the Lutheran sense. It is a political POV based on a desire to confirm an obviously progressive philosophy by redefining the person of Christ.

Further, had He had both male and female organs, this would have been reported when He was circumcised. Additionally, it was the Roman custom that victims of crucifixion hung on the cross naked. While there is disagreement as to whether or not Jesus naked, chances are that he was.
There’s no historical record or evidence for this pastor’s nonsense.

Good point on the circumcision. Also, I think you are correct that Jesus hung on the cross naked, we just see him not naked on crucifixes. Plus the ultimate humiliation for God is to be murdered on a cross, and to make it ultimately humiliating he would almost have to be exposed. But I digress 😃

Admittedly, this is a rather weird claim. But then again, in early Christian art there was an artistic convention that sort of depicted Jesus as being a bit ‘girlish’ (wide hips, long hair, sloping shoulders, round face, even slightly-protruding breasts), akin to depictions of Apollo or Dionysus where they are also a bit feminine. For the early Christians, this might have visually symbolized St. Paul’s idea that there is no male or female in Christ Jesus, Jesus being an all-encompassing nurturer and life-giver.

Maybe the pastor was going for an ultra-literal version of that?

In modern society? Well, I would love to assume that, however, I’m very sketchy about giving him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Actually, a lot of traditional Muslim works teach that Mary was not only intersex, but that that’s how the Virgin Birth happened. (Yeah, like it could even work that way.)

So yeah, there is always somebody willing to believe something really terrible, rather than facing up to Scripture.

Can you quote some Muslims sources for this statement?

As far as I know, it is only some Ahmadis that consider Mary to have been a full hermaphrodite. Hardly “a lot” of “traditional” Muslims.
